The objective of the MOMO I-project (Human Resources in Research & Development: Monitoring System on Career Paths and Mobility Flows), the predecessor to MOMO II, carried out in 2004/2005 had been to collect and to analyse data sources and data banks on migration flows and career paths of academics and private sector personnel in selected countries of the European Union.
In 2005 and 2006, the Kassel research team took part in another European study on the mobility of the highly qualified: "Feasibility of Indicators of Researchers’ Geographical Mobility and Career Paths" (short MOMO II). Following the MOMO I project, selected indicators of the geographical mobility and the career development of researchers were put at a test in the MOMO II project and the results were compared with existing data sources in particular sample census data. Momo II was conducted in six countries (Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and the United Kingdom).

The project was funded by the European Union and was coordinated by the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS), Sevilla, Spain.
