Obituary for Prof. Dr. Frank Träger

Prof. Dr. Frank Träger was born on June 4, 1948 in Meerane (Saxony). From 1967 to 1973 he studied mathematics and physics at the University of Heidelberg. After receiving his doctorate in 1976 and his habilitation in 1981, he spent several years as a guest scientist at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San José (USA). In 1986 he was appointed professor and in 1990 he became Chair of Experimental Physics I at the University of Kassel, which he held until his retirement in 2013. During this time he acted with great commitment as dean of the physics department (1995/96) and organized numerous conferences in Germany and abroad. From 1995 to 2012 he was editor-in-chief of the renowned international journal Applied Physics B – Lasers and Optics (Springer Verlag).

On July 4, 2000, Prof. Dr. Träger collaborated with seven other professors from the University of Kassel to set up the Center for Interdisciplinary Nanostructure Science and Technology, initially as a loose association in the area of ​​interest in nanostructure science. In 2002, the University of Kassel officially founded the scientific center CINSaT. In the founding years of the CINSaT, Prof. Dr. Frank Träger acted as the speaker for the CINSaT until he gave up this position in 2010. In 2014 Prof. Dr. Träger left the CINSaT due to his retirement.

On January 13, 2022, our founding member and former speaker Prof. Dr. Frank Träger passed away. We would like to express our sympathy on behalf of all members of the CINSaT and wish all the bereaved a lot of strength in coping with the grief. Prof. Dr. Frank Träger will be remembered for his dedication and service.
