About the Research Network

The research profile

On the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the Federal Social Court, renowned social scientists and representatives of the social justice system take stock of social law and social policy research in the Federal Republic of Germany in a memorandum. They make it clear that research capacities and opportunities in this field are declining and even threatened; and this despite the fact that social law and social policy are of particular importance for social integration in (post-) modern societies.

A first indication of the decline is the low degree of anchoring of social law and social policy in the local research landscape, especially at universities. Only a few exceptions contradict this finding and contribute to the visibility of social law and social policy research. These include the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy in Munich, the Research Center for Social Law and Social Policy at the Faculty of Law at the University of Hamburg, and the SOCIUM Research Center Inequality and Social Policy (formerly the Center for Social Policy) at the University of Bremen. They address social law and social policy from different angles; social policy issues are considered from a jurisprudential and economic perspective, or an opening to other disciplines is pursued from the perspective of social law and with a view to social policy issues.

In view of the changes and the increasing challenges of the welfare state, and in view of the associated challenges for social law on the one hand and social law and social policy research on the other, interdisciplinarity plays an important role, albeit to different degrees and with different focuses.

Management Board

The board of directors of the FoSS consists of six professorial members and their deputies, who are appointed for three years by the deaneries of the six participating departments in agreement with the presidiums of the two universities. The professorial members of the directorate each co-opt one member and one deputy for the academic staff or doctoral students of the respective university, so that the number of members of the directorate increases to a total of eight.

The Board of Directors appoints two spokespersons from among its members. This is Prof. Dr. Felix Welti (University of Kassel, FB 01) from the University of Kassel. This position is currently vacant in Fulda. The main tasks of the board of directors and the executive management include the preparation of the annual report, financial planning, and the preparation and management of the association meeting.

Association Meeting

At least once a year, a university-public association meeting is held, which is convened by the directorate. It must also be convened if the Presidential Board of either the University of Applied Sciences Fulda or the University of Kassel requests it or if at least two of the participating departments or three members of the Directorate request such a meeting.

All professors and scientific staff as well as doctoral students who are scientifically active within the framework of the research network are invited. The purpose of the meeting is, among other things, to inform about activities, to discuss the budget for the past and the coming year, and to discuss recommendations for the (further) development of the research network.
