Prof. Dr. jur. Alexander Roßnagel

Alongside Prof. Dr Klaus David and Prof. Dr Udo Winand, Prof. Dr Alexander Roßnagel was one of the three founding members who initiated the ITeG research centre at the University of Kassel in 2005 with the aim of intensifying interdisciplinary research and helping to ensure that IT systems gain the necessary acceptance, avoid detrimental effects and open up desirable application opportunities. In 2014, the University of Kassel established the ITeG as the Research Centre for Information Systems Design (ITeG). In April 2015, Professor Roßnagel took on the role of Deputy Managing Director, which he held until 2021. The University of Kassel awarded Professor Roßnagel a senior professorship between March 2019 and July 2022. On 1 March 2021, Prof. Dr Alexander Roßnagel took office as the Hessian Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

Professor Roßnagel is a lawyer and has spent decades researching questions of legally compliant technology design. He is an internationally sought-after expert and brings this expertise beyond the ITeG to politics and the public. Professor Roßnagel is a member of federal political committees. His legal interests centre on the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation and the possibilities for improving them as part of its evaluation. In particular, questions of data protection and information security are analysed. The areas of technology analysed include the Internet of Things, smart cars, Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, assistance systems, social networks, cloud computing, big data and fake news.
