C6 - Advanced solar collectors

The sixth SolNet PhD course on
"Advanced solar collectors"

Czech Technical University, Prague, Czech Republic
was held on 4 - 9 February 2009

General Information
Organization:

Lund University, Sweden (ECTS credits responsible)
Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic (Host University)

The course covered the wide topic of solar collectors (flat-plate, tube, concentrating) with respect to advanced hybrid solutions like PV/T collectors, air-liquid collectors, high-temperature collectors or building-integrated collectors. The course was focused on thermal and optical - theoretical and experimental - characterization of solar collectors.

All SOLNET PhD students were expected to participate in this course. The course was limited to 30 participants whereby 20 places were available for non-Solnet applicants.

Diplomas were issued on active participation in the entire course

The course was free of tuition fee. The students were responsible for travel, meals and accommodation costs.

3 ECTS-points, workload: 90 hours

Course description

The course was organized by the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU Prague) together with Lund University, Sweden (ECTS credits responsible).

The course comprised the following:

    January 12 – 30, 2009: Preparation at home universities (see 4)
February 4 – 9, 2009: Course at CTU Prague, Technology Center (CTIV)
Finishing work at home universities, work on reports

The course consisted of approximately 90 hours, in total 3 ECTS points (only attainable for PhD students). Diplomas were issued by the Lund University based on active participation in the entire course.

Costs: The course was free of tuition. The students were responsible for their travel, meal and accommodation costs.

The course covered the wide topic of solar collectors (flat-plate, tube, concentrating) with respect to advanced hybrid solutions like PV/T collectors, air-liquid collectors, hightemperature collectors or building-integrated collectors. The course was focused on thermal and optical, theoretical and experimental characterization of solar collectors. The secondary topic of the course yields Climate Policies.

In the first part of the course students received an assignment (a literature study) on the selected topic of advanced solar collectors. The assignment was prepared at the home universities and findings were presented during the course.

The lectures covered the topics on solar collectors and advanced solutions mentioned above. Students learnt the fundamentals of solar collector optics and selected heat transfer topics. Different approaches for modeling of solar collectors, methods of experimental testing and results evaluation were presented.

Lectures on solar collectors was given by Prof. Bjorn Karlsson, Dr. Tomas Matuska, Dr. Bengt Perers and Dr. Yiannis Tripanagnostopoulos.

There was a technical visit to Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) in Trebon (southern Bohemia) and an excursion to TIC modular experimental glasshouse equipped with Fresnel lens PV/T collectors and Fresnel lens photo bioreactor in Nove Hrady.

All accepted applicants had to prepare a report on a topic (parametric study, literature review) given at the course in order to get the certificate for ECTS credits.
