Euromat 2025 Conference - MecaNano Session D3

From nanoindentation to machine learning with MecaNano in Granada

Co-organizers of symposium D3: Verena Maier-Kiener, Benoit Merle, Andre Clausner, Maciej Szczerba

Our Mechanical Behavior of Materials lab participated in EUROMAT 2025, held in Granada, Spain. Prof. Benoit Merle co-organized the session D3 – Mechanics Characterization and Modelling, together Prof. Verena Maier-Kiener (Montanuniversität Leoben, AT), with Prof. Maciej Szczerba (Polish Academy of Sciences, PL) and Dr. Andre Clausner (Fraunhofer IKTS, DE). Sponsored by MecaNano, this session was one of the largest and most successful of the entire conference.

The scope of Session D3 covered a broad spectrum, ranging from nanoindentation and experimental nanomechanics to molecular dynamics simulations and machine learning approaches. Two distinguished keynote lectures enriched the program: Prof. George Pharr (Texas A&M University, USA) and Prof. Sandrine Brochard (University of Poitiers, FR) shared their pioneering insights into the mechanics of materials at the nano scale.

Our group contributed with several oral presentations: Dr. Abba and Ms. Mona Stoll reported on their recent progress within the ERC project NanoHighSpeed, while Mr. Tizian Arold presented advances from his DFG project in the Priority Program SPP 2074. These talks stimulated lively discussions and underscored the strong engagement of our group in the international materials science community.

Beyond the scientific program, EUROMAT 2025 provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen collaborations and exchange ideas. The warm Andalusian weather set a vibrant backdrop for networking, not least during the rooftop reception at the conference center, where participants enjoyed tapas with a panoramic view of Granada.

Overall, EUROMAT 2025 was a highly successful and rewarding experience for our group, both scientifically and socially.
