Institute of Materials Engineering represented at STEM-Saturday 2026

For the fourth time, the University of Kassel opened its doors for the STEM-Saturday on May 30, 2025, at the Wilhelmshöher Allee campus. Numerous families and interested visitors took the opportunity to gain exciting insights into the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and engineering, while also participating in hands-on activities.

The Institute of Materials Engineering was also represented with its own booth. Maximilian Barthel, Lisa Ott, Carolin Knab, and Leonard Laabs (pictured from left to right) presented current research topics in an engaging and accessible way, inviting visitors of all ages to explore and participate.

One of the most popular attractions was the Charpy impact tester, where self-made specimens built from LEGO bricks and popsicle sticks were subjected to a small crash test. Another highlight was the microscopic examination of metallic microstructures. Many curious visitors also took the opportunity to examine clothing, jewellery, or even their own skin under the microscope, discovering materials and surfaces from an entirely new perspective. The Institute of Materials Engineering is delighted by the strong interest and the many inspiring conversations at the booth. Once again, the STEM-Saturday proved to be a successful day filled with curiosity, exchange, and enthusiasm for STEM topics.
