A look into the future - Successful Open Day at the Institute of Materials Engineering

On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the Institute of Materials Engineering at the University of Kassel opened its doors to the public - with great success. Numerous visitors took the opportunity to gain a fascinating insight into the world of modern materials and current research.

Under the motto "A look into the future of materials", all five of the Institute's departments on the Holländischer Platz campus gave impressive presentations on how smart plastics, 3D-printed metals and laser technologies will shape the materials engineering of tomorrow. Guided laboratory tours provided guests with exciting insights into ongoing research projects and current developments.

At various hands-on stations, visitors could experiment for themselves, such as having a shopping cart chip lasered with their name, testing the hardness of a metal with a hammer or looking over the shoulders of the plastics engineers as they cast test rods live using a mini injection molding machine. In addition to intelligent materials, sustainable materials such as bio-plastics were also presented and it was explained how research into these materials is being conducted at the Institute.

The Carrera track, which was controlled using electrically conductive silicone strips, was particularly well received - a practical example of the use of intelligent materials.

There was also plenty of opportunity for discussion: over a barbecue and cool drinks, researchers and guests enjoyed lively conversations in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Institute's verdict was consistently positive: the Open Day not only offered exciting insights into research, but also a lively platform for dialog and networking.

We are already looking forward to the next Open Day in 2026.
