German-Russian Cooperation Network Biotechnology

Biotechnology is still one of the fastest growing industrial sectors in the world economy. Unlike other industrial sectors the German biotechnology branch overcame the financial crisis in 2008 without any problems and actually shows a significant growth until today (BIOTECHNOLOGIE.DE, 2010).

Referring to this background and based on the agreements between Germany and Russia for strategic cooperation in education, research and innovation (BMBF, 2010) in April 2005, the German-Russian Cooperation Network Biotechnology was launched.

The German side is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the participating Federal States whilst the Russian side is financed by the Russian Ministry of Science and Education.

The first aim of the network was to establish a bond between the regions of Moscow, Moscow region and St. Petersburg / Leningrad region and the federal states of Berlin-Brandenburg, Hesse and Saxony.

In 2008 the A.N. Bach Institute of Biochemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, became the official coordination partner for Russia in the network. At the same time, the institute acts as the National Contact Point (NCP) of Russia for the 7th Research Framework Programme of the European Union in the thematic fields of "Food, Agriculture, Fisheries and Biotechnology”.

Since January 2011 the East-West Science Centre at the University of Kassel, Hessen has taken over the coordination of the German part of the network as well as for cooperation in the academia research field whilst the Cluster Industrial Biotechnology (CLIB2021) is the coordinating body for R & D cooperation between enterprises. Other German partners are the University of Bielefeld as speaker on bioinformatics and system biology and the Laser and Immunology Research Center (Life Center), University of Munich as speaker for the medical research area.
