Safer Materials. Safe and Reliable Materials

In contrast to conventional materials, newer materials often possess significant advantages, making them lighter, harder, more flexible, or even more sustainable. However, how much damage they can handle and how they react when material failure occures remains unclear. This can go hand in hand with substantial safety risks if unforeseen events take place. LOEWE´s main focus in the research project Safer Materials is in the creation if methods and the acquisition of technical know-how needed to make materials safe and reliable when they reach their limits, as well as when they are exposed to different factors. The research includes reciprocal effects between human activity in manufacturing and processing and material properties into its studies, effects which have thus far been paid very little attention to. A subfield of materials technology is planned to be developed at the University of Kassel from the LOEWE research project.
