Part-time with 65% of the regular workhours of a full-time employee, for 36 months(position for academic qualification corresponding to § 65 HHG i. V. m. § 2 Abs. 1 Satz 1 WissZeitVG; opportunity for PhD project) in the project “Optimization of enzymes and metabolic pathways of Rhodotorula glutinis.”

Tasks:

Services in research;

The position is financed from the programme ERA CoBiotech and it is in close collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, University of Crete, Greece (Assist. Prof. Ioannis Pavlidis). Our goal is to develop new biocatalytic processes to recycle wastewater from the olive oil producers in Mediterranean countries. The challenge is the sustainability of these processes under industrial standards. Modern methods of biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, protein engineering and organic chemistry are used, in order to reach the scientific targets. The doctoral thesis is focused on the optimization of Rhodotorula glutinis in genetic level for the production of secondary metabolites of added-value, by optimizing the existing metabolic routes or introducing other enzymes to maximize the carbon flow to these pathways. The main target of the project is the development of an efficient bioprocess of valorization of the olive mill wastewater, to produce food additives via its fermentation with Rhodotorula glutinis.

Requirements:

  • completed university studies (Master or Diploma) in fields of Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Biology or Life Sciences with grade "good" or better.
  • very good knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry and organic chemistry.
  • preferably very good knowledge of biochemical and analytical working methods (HPLC, GC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, etc.).
  • knowledge in the field of yeast genetics and bioinformatics.
  • availability for relocation (two working locations will be registered, University of Kassel and University of Crete, Greece)
  • very good command of English, both written and spoken.
