Forschungskolloquien des INCHER-Kassel: Where do women earn more than men? Explaining regional differences in the Gender Pay Gap

It is a well-known fact that in Germany, women’s wages are about 20 per cent lower than men’s. This national figure hides profound spatial variation in the gender pay gap that ranges from 41 per cent to -4 per cent, i.e. in some regions women earn more than men. We examine the reasons for this spatial pattern on the basis of theory-based individual, establishment and regional determinants. Our findings underscore the role played by the establishment composition in a region and the kind of jobs provided.
