Research Assistant - Managing Director of the ALLEGRO focus area (m/f/d) EG 14 TV-H - Department of Cutting and Joining Manufacturing Processes

The position is initially limited until 31.12.2023. (Qualification position according to § 65 HHG in conjunction with § 2 para. 1 sentence 2 WissZeitVG). The opportunity for independent scientific work and own qualification (habilitation) exists in addition to the assumption of management tasks.

Aluminum and aluminum alloys have been important construction materials for decades and are indispensable in aircraft construction, for example. The key to exploiting the full lightweight construction potential of aluminum lies in increasing the geometric and microstructural complexity of products, but this has not yet been technologically feasible. Methods that have been successfully applied to steel materials, such as press hardening, cannot be directly transferred to aluminum alloys, as the hardening mechanisms used in practice are completely different in steels and aluminum alloys.

In order to enable the next generation of lightweight construction concepts with the material aluminum, the state of Hesse is funding the LOEWE (State Offensive for the Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence) focus ALLEGRO. The aim is to use basic research to develop a technological basis for new efficient processes for the integrated shaping and heat treatment of wrought aluminum alloys. The synergistic combination of relevant technology modules (forming, tribology, joining, coating, material characterization, component properties, service life) is intended to accelerate technology development and enable it to be transferred to applications. The LOEWE priority currently involves 6 professors from various disciplines at the Technical University of Darmstadt and the University of Kassel as well as more than 10 research assistants plus associated scientists from Germany, Sweden and Norway.

Tasks
As part of the focus area, which has been running since 01.01.2018, you will be responsible for all tasks related to the organizational coordination of the focus area and will work with the spokesperson of the focus area and the other committees of the focus area. You will design, monitor and control the internal processes, the regular project meetings and the use of funds and act as the central contact person for all scientists involved in the priority area. You will also work closely with administrative and technical staff at the Department of Separating and Joining Manufacturing Processes at the University of Kassel, who take on tasks in the areas of secretariat, finance, event organization, external presentation and system administration of the focus area. You will be responsible for reporting and coordinating the preparation of a planned SFB/TR proposal. In doing so, you must always consider the content of the research focus as a basis and actively help to shape it.

If you are interested, as a PostDoc you will also have the opportunity to carry out independent scientific work in the field of welding of high-strength aluminum alloys, in particular friction stir welding, laser beam welding and magnetic pulse welding. You will be integrated into the specialist area of cutting and joining manufacturing processes www.tff-kassel.de.

Requirements:

• You have completed your doctorate either in the field of materials science or mechanical engineering or in a comparable discipline, preferably in the field of production engineering and/or metallic materials. With specialized knowledge in the fields of joining/welding and/or high-strength aluminum alloys, you would be ideally suited for the advertised position. The required degree must be available by the recruitment date at the latest.
• You have sound knowledge of the management and administration of scientific projects, ideally collaborative projects
• You have experience in personnel management and are able to provide structured and goal-oriented guidance to administrative, technical, scientific and student employees
• You have a very good command of written and spoken German and English
• You have a high level of comprehension and are able to familiarize yourself with complex issues within a very short period of time
• You enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from other disciplines
• You can remain enthusiastic about a topic for years and want to understand interrelationships in detail
• You are communicative and enjoy working in a team with others.
