Lecture: "Crop plants in Vietnam"

It's all about spices and essential oil plants such as cajeput trees, cassia, citronella grass and star anise. From cultivation to processing, we accompany agricultural engineer Holger Schmedes, Witzenhausen, on his inspection tour for organic certification in Vietnam.

All these plant species provide essential oils and/or spices for medicine and cooking. They play a role in world trade and generate income for farmers. We know cajeput oil from the "tiger balm" for colds; the Chinese cinnamon bark cassia is a cinnamon substitute and aromatic, slightly bitter spice. Citronella grass is used as a repellent against mosquitoes, is a tasty ingredient in teas and is important for the cosmetics industry. The decorative real star anise belongs in the gingerbread of classic Christmas baking and is a remedy for coughs, bronchitis and other colds. Holger Schmedes shows these and other plant species such as Buddha's hand or the famous rice terraces from Vietnam's north and south.
