Coffee seminar "The red-brown gold - discover the world of coffee"

From Friday, October 19, 4:30 pm to Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 5:30 pm, the Tropical Greenhouse will be all about coffee: We Germans drink around 100 liters of beer and a good 140 liters of water per capita per year. Do you know how many liters of coffee we drink? Germany is a coffee country, with over 160 liters per capita - is it any wonder that coffee is one of the most important commodities on the world market? From the bush to the cup of coffee, around 25 million people worldwide depend on coffee as farmers, plantation owners, cooperatives, traders, importers and exporters, brokers and refiners.

On Friday from 5 p.m. there will be a colorful mixture of old stories and current facts about coffee, the journey will take us from Ethiopia to coffee to go in the cities of the world! In the evening, we will experience how our favorite hot beverage is produced and the path the beans take from the plantation to our cups on the coffee course: you will discover the fruits on the coffee plants in the tropical greenhouse, sort and transport green coffee, negotiate the price on the exchange and roast beans for "your" personal organically produced and fair-trade coffee. Then hopefully you will enjoy this roast "hot as fire, black as night and sweet as love" as the perfect infusion!

On Saturday, we'll start with a tour of the tropical greenhouse - focusing on ecological aspects of coffee cultivation, cultivation systems, climate change and virtual water. One example: in a study published in August 2016, The Climate Institute from Australia warns that climate change could reduce the potential area under coffee cultivation to half of the current level by 2050.

During a visit to the non-profit roasting plant Röstwerk in Witzenhausen, we will experience a roasting process, enjoy coffee and learn about the special features of this local roasting plant.

In the afternoon, Kleber Cruz Garcia from the fair trade company Gepa will provide an exciting report on his practical experience of the coffee trade. He will report on what is important behind the scenes in fair trade, what consequences price developments on the stock exchange or climate change have for both the growers and the trade.

After theory and discussion, a tasting of various fair trade coffees awaits us as a sensory highlight. Kleber Cruz Garcia will let us taste the different types of coffee and coffee varieties from different growing regions. We will experience and enjoy small coffee delicacies - including cultural ones - for all the senses.

The seminar is a cooperation between Weltläden in Hessen e.V., Tropengewächshaus Witzenhausen/University of Kassel and WeltGarten Witzenhausen.
