The position is initially limited until 30.04.2020 as part of the project "Abnormal grain growth in Fe-based SMA" (§ 2 para. 1 WissZeitVG). The possibility of a doctorate is given.

Tasks:

The position holder will primarily deal with the comprehensive characterization of iron-based shape memory materials (Fe-based SMA). The system Fe-Mn-Al-Ni-X, which is the focus of the investigations, is characterized by excellent pseudoelastic properties. The low manufacturing costs in particular make this SMA system appear very promising for use in the field of civil engineering. However, there are still major challenges in setting suitable microstructures that meet the requirements of the corresponding potential applications. In addition, previous investigations have shown that the alloys are highly susceptible to corrosion, so that an initial assessment of the properties in the relevant media is of great importance. Corresponding investigations into the possibilities of adjusting suitable microstructures via heat treatment are therefore the focus of the project. In addition, fundamental initial findings on the corrosion behavior of Fe-Mn-Al-Ni-X SMA are to be developed in an appropriate manner.

Prerequisites:

An above-average university degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering or similar as well as good IT and English skills. Extensive knowledge in the field of Fe-based shape memory materials, preferably in the Fe-Mn-Al-X-Y system, is essential. Comprehensive knowledge of the microstructural evaluation of alloys after heat treatment is also expected. Knowledge of test and measurement technology, heat treatment strategies and the corrosion of metallic materials is required.

Advantageous are:

Basic knowledge in the field of civil engineering materials is desirable.
