Sustainable transformation in Latin America: opportunities and obstacles

Against the backdrop of escalating climate, environmental and social crises, sustainability policies are becoming increasingly important both globally and locally. In international development policy, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are intended to create the conditions for a socio-ecological transformation of society, the economy and politics worldwide. The aim is to end poverty and hunger worldwide, reduce inequalities, promote gender equality, protect the climate, stop deforestation, protect human rights and initiate new global cooperation.

Beyond these goals, poverty, inequality and hunger, deforestation rates and biodiversity loss are increasing worldwide. The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated these developments. This contradiction between international targets and regional reality will be examined using Latin America as an example. The conference is dedicated to a critical review of the implementation of various sustainability goals in the region and asks about the challenges and possible answers for a global socio-ecological turnaround in a post-pandemic world.
