8th Italy Day: Italian Libraries - Spaces of Research

In his novel Il nome della rosa (1980), Umberto Eco combines the story of a lost medieval manuscript with mysterious deaths. Forbidden passions, criminal energies and secret knowledge characterize the events that revolve around the precious library of a medieval Benedictine abbey. To this day, Eco's novel continues to fascinate, negotiating the philosophical, theological and literary discourses of the time and stimulating research in history, art and literature.

The eighth Italy Day at the University of Kassel expands the view from this fictional library to real libraries in Italy as spaces of research. In addition to Eco's highly regarded library, the rich holdings on the history of science in Brescia, the pictorial decoration of Italian libraries and the library in the Royal Palace of Naples will be discussed.
