Frankenhausen farm store participated in Sustainability Day

On Thursday, September 10, the Sustainability Day took place throughout Hesse. The organic farming model region NORDHESSEN participated with its pilot project "BioRegioHofladen" - a cooperation with the farm store of the Hessian State Domain Frankenhausen. The domain is one of 290 demonstration farms for organic farming that offer insights into organic farming to anyone interested.

Under the motto: "BioRegional - Direct appreciation creates regional added value" the customers of the farm store were made aware of the regional organic farmers and their products in the farm store of Domäne Frankenhausen.

In addition to the regular sale of, among other things, organic products from the region and from their own farm, there were several "Wold - Cafés" (discussion circles), where consumers could exchange ideas with the organic farmers present on the topic of "BioRegional production, processing and marketing - what are the challenges and opportunities? An exciting dialogue ensued about the risks under which the farms are currently operating, the difficulties, but also the new perspectives that are emerging as a result of the conversion to the production or processing of organic products.

One of the new partner businesses "Gasthaus Henze" from Vellmar was also present. The Ullrich family has been expanding its cuisine with regional organic products for several months and offered burgers from dual-purpose beef and potato soup from the farm products of the Frankenhausen domain.

As producers who sell their products through the farm store came Christian Berdi, organic farmer of a Highland Cattle suckler herd, the basis of the delicious salami and pepper bites, Timo Opfermann, supplier of salads and herbs - fresh, local and organic from Grebenstein, and last but not least Petra Kaiser from the Linsenmanufaktur, which this year was awarded 2nd place in the competition WeltverbEsserer 2020.

In addition to the colorful variety of products, the World Café also brought a lively exchange. In the conversations, direct questions could be asked about the products, thus building more understanding and trust.

"The direct appreciation through customer contact at this event today, that's a great way to see for once how consumers are happy about the quality of the products. Through direct marketing, you are more in relation to each other and that is good!", Christian Berdi, organic young farmer from Ippinghausen, is pleased.

In addition to the exchange, there was also a large map where customers could see where exactly each product came from and how it found its way from the producer to the farm store. "Why go far when good things are so close," says Katharina Mittelstraß, who manages the Frankenhausen farm store, where more than 30 producers from the region complement the farm store assortment.

The Ökolandbau Modellregion Nordhessen has set out to promote networking between producers and consumers. "The Corona crisis shows us that we need a more stable network of regional supply. Think globally, act locally helps to support sustainability," emphasizes Silke Flörke, coordinator of the Organic Farming Model Region. Farm stores and owner-managed organic stores as well as organic farmers can contact the coordinator of the organic farming model region if they are interested in the concept.
