Successful online events with Indonesia

More than 10 years ago Science Bridge e. V. at the University of Kassel started to establish cooperation with universities in Indonesia. Within the framework of the Indonesian-German-Network (IGN), several successful online events took place in the past months.

Online events cannot fundamentally replace personal contact in university teaching, but international cooperation in particular also benefits from them. Science Bridge intensified the collaboration with Indonesia.

From September 7 to 8, 2020, the conference "Gene surgery with CRISPR-Cas and possible applications for Sarc-CoV 2" took place. Science Bridge organized this conference, attended by 130 people, together with six Indonesian universities. This was followed by other joint events: On March 16, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Nellen gave a guest lecture at the University of Jember on "CRISPR-Cas: basics and applications."

"Although it is very sad that the personal contact with our friends and colleagues in Indonesia has been interrupted" says Prof. Wolfgang Nellen, "the continuation of the online events is immensely important to maintain contact and trust. After all, even in times of pandemic, we managed to find a PhD position for an Indonesian student in Germany and talks about another PhD student are on a good track."

The seminar "How to write a scientific publication" is scheduled for April at Gadjah Mada University in Yogjakarta. Other events are being planned.

Collaboration is ongoing in other ways as well: Biology student Muhammad Khalid Abdullah was recruited for the DFG project "CRISPR-Whisper" and is making explanatory videos for science communication under the title "The World of CRISPR with Khalid."

"As soon as travel is possible again, I will be in Indonesia! My colleagues there are waiting for it as impatiently as I am," Nellen concludes.

The Indonesian-German-Network:

Many lecturers and students from the University of Kassel and several Indonesian universities have participated in exchanges, visited institutions in each other's countries, and taught and learned there since the international network IGN was established. The network now consists of about 15 universities in the world's largest Muslim country. The University of Kassel has entered into cooperation agreements with several of them through Science Bridge.
