Learning through Cultural Education: Additional Qualification for Student Teachers

Dancing with children and young people, taking photographs or creating plays - these skills are increasingly in demand in schools. The new additional qualification "Cultural Practice in Schools" at the University of Kassel, which is aimed primarily at student teachers, focuses precisely on this. Prospective teachers studying at the University of Kassel can set professional accents with this certified in-depth study program.

The program consists of four modules. Participants first learn the basics of cultural education in an introductory seminar. This is followed by two practical seminars in which they gain their own experience in the areas of theater, music, dance, visual arts, photography or film. The third module is the professional field internship at a school with a cultural profile, in a cultural institution or in a cooperation project. Participants complete the supplementary course with an academic term paper or artistic work and a thirty-minute final interview. Upon successful completion of the courses, students receive a certificate. The first seminar will start in the coming winter semester.

"The core prerequisite for participation is an interest in art, aesthetics and pedagogy," says Prof. Dr. Verena Freytag, Professor of Aesthetic Education and Movement Education at the Institute of Music at Kassel University, who coordinates the program. Students of all teaching professions and subjects can participate. "For teachers in the profession, the plan is to offer the program with a reduced number of hours as continuing education," Freytag explains.

The additional qualification "Cultural Practice in Schools" is funded through the second phase of the PRONET project (Professionalization through Networking). The federal and state governments are supporting PRONET as part of the joint "Quality Offensive Teacher Education" with funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of more than 6 million euros. PRONET is particularly concerned with linking subject-specific, subject-didactic and educational science curricula in such a way that they complement each other.

The registration deadline for students is September 15 for the seminar in the winter semester and March 15 for the seminar in the summer semester.
