Great woman of the post-war period: exhibition pays tribute to Nora Platiel

At the University of Kassel, an exhibition honors the life and work of lawyer and politician Nora Platiel. In addition to her extensive socio-political commitment, Platiel (1896 - 1979) was also a strong advocate for the founding of a university in Kassel. The artistic work of her son Roger is also presented in the exhibition, which opens tonight (September 26).

Platiel is considered one of the most important women of the post-war period in Hesse. Nevertheless, and although a street is named after her on the campus of the University of Kassel, few people are familiar with her today. Platiel was a member of the Hessian state parliament between 1945 and 1966 and later a judge at the Hessian state court.

Born in Bochum, she completed her legal clerkship in Kassel in 1927. After the Nazis seized power, the Social Democrat of Jewish faith fled to Paris and later to Switzerland. After the end of the war, she returned to her adopted home of Kassel and became a district court councilor. From 1954 to 1966, Platiel was a member of the state parliament, at times as deputy chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group. In Kassel, she campaigned for the founding of what was then a comprehensive university. She was particularly committed to women's rights and to understanding between Germany and Israel.

Platiel's son Roger (1934-1978) studied at the Werkakademie, a predecessor institution of the Kunsthochschule. He made a name for himself as a graphic artist. Several of his works are shown in the exhibition.

The exhibition was initiated by Ralf Schaper, a friend of the Platiel family. He was able to draw on numerous documents from the family collection, but also from public archives. Prof. Dr. Arno Ehresmann, Vice President of the University of Kassel, will speak at the opening (6 p.m., Gießhaus).

The exhibition is located in the foyer of the Humanities and Cultural Studies building (Kurt-Wolters-Strasse 3). Admission is free. Opening hours: Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (until Oct. 25). It is supplemented by an Internet exhibition at https://www.platiel2019.de/.
