Study MINT - try it out!

MINT stands for mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. The special feature of the newly created plusMINT program at the University of Kassel: a two-semester, orientation study entry and discovery phase before students select a focus subject. Students thus first get a taste of all the fields of study that interest them and take their first credits with them into the subsequent focus study.

The plusMINT program primarily appeals to students who are interested in mathematics, computer science, the natural sciences or technology, but are unsure which STEM field of study suits them and whether their qualifications are sufficient for a technical or scientific degree program. Admission requirements for the bachelor's program are a general university entrance qualification, university of applied sciences entrance qualification or vocational qualification.

The one-year introductory phase of the plusMINT bachelor's program consists of initial subject-specific courses and examinations as well as tutorials and workshops to support study and career planning. Furthermore, key competencies are acquired and professional internships are completed. "Intensive personal support in the first year of study facilitates the transition from school to university, and also enables first-year students to make a qualified choice of subject," says Prof. Dr. René Matzdorf, Vice President for Studies and Teaching at Kassel University, describing the advantages of the orientation phase. This increases the chance of a successful bachelor's degree.

After the orientation phase, plusMINT students choose a major they like best. They can choose one of nine traditional bachelor's degree programs from the STEM spectrum: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechatronics, Nanostructure Science, Physics or Environmental Engineering.

The Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts is funding the plusMINT orientation program and two other orientation program offerings at Goethe University Frankfurt for the next two years with approximately 1.69 million euros. The application period for the 2019/20 winter semester begins on June 1, 2019. Prospective students can apply online via the University of Kassel website and have the option of applying for BAföG.
