CANCELLED What does a place have to tell? Perspectives and challenges of current memorial site education

Unfortunately, the event has to be canceled. A new date in spring 2022 is being planned.

Panel discussion

76 years after the end of National Socialism, only a few contemporary witnesses are still alive who can talk about their experiences. Today, in the transition from communicative to cultural memory, it is primarily images and films, interviews with contemporary witnesses, historical objects and architectural relics that convey the National Socialist past. But what exactly does the passing of contemporary witnesses and the change in the culture of remembrance mean for educational work at historical crime scenes, in digital space or at places of learning without a direct historical connection to National Socialism? What does a place have to tell? What can a document testify to? These questions will be addressed in a panel discussion on December 1, 2021, in which experts from the field of historical and political education will participate. Under the impetus of Prof. Dr. Alfons Kenkmann, Chair of History Didactics at the University of Leipzig, Dr. Verena Haug, Head of the Education and Exhibition Department at the Anne Frank Zentrum Berlin, Dr. Akim Jah, Research Associate in the Research and Education Department at the Arolsen Archives, Ann-Kathrin Mogge, PhD student and political image maker in the #Hatebreach project, Die Kopiloten. The panel will be opened by Prof. Dr. Hubertus Büschel, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History, who will moderate the event together with the director of the Breitenau Memorial, Ann Katrin Düben.

The event will also be streamed live on YouTube.
