University of Kassel returns to face-to-face teaching in summer semester

After four semesters severely affected by Corona, the University of Kassel plans to return to normal operations. In view of the development of the pandemic, face-to-face teaching is possible, sensible and necessary for the coming summer semester, the university management affirmed in a circular. Digital formats still remain possible as a supplement.

"We look forward to being able to teach and learn together on campus again this summer," said University President Prof. Dr. Ute Clement in a letter to all students, faculty and staff at the university. All experts expected the Omikron wave to subside in the foreseeable future, the letter said in justification. In addition, it is clear that Omikron infections are generally less severe. The summer semester begins April 1, with classes starting April 11.

As a rule, classes will again be held on site in seminar rooms and lecture halls, and all classrooms can be used with 100 percent of the regular seating capacity. "We freely assume that hygiene rules will also apply in April and beyond, that we will wear masks, for example," said Ute Clement. Details will be clarified in the coming weeks according to the situation. The university management appealed once again to take advantage of vaccination offers.

Lecturers can use digital formats as a supplement if they offer didactic added value. However, this should not displace valuable face-to-face offerings. The university also expects students to return to campus. Where students are unable to do so for health reasons, solutions will be found on a case-by-case basis.

"We will experience campus life in a largely relaxed and safe atmosphere, which we have been sorely missing for two years now," Ute Clement said happily. According to the current status, this will also remain the case in the then following winter semester 2022/23.

The winter semester 2021/22, which is now ending, was last held as a hybrid semester.

Note: For all young people who want to start studying this year or in the coming years, the University of Kassel is offering virtual information days on February 22 and 23. The focus will be on the question: Which study program is right for me, as well as tips on organizing and financing studies, for example. More information under www.uni-kassel.de/go/infotage
