Tour of plant use and climate adaptation strategies on the Holländischer Platz campus.

For the next meeting of the Sustain Group "Sustainability Communication", a tour on plant use and climate adaptation strategies on the Holländischer Platz campus will be offered by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Körner (Head of the Department of Landscaping, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development, FB ASL).
The tour is open to all interested parties. Meeting point is the Green Office, Nora-Platiel-Strasse 2.

In the 1980s, the approach of the so-called Kassel School was followed on the public spaces of the Holländischer Platz campus. This theory of open space planning is essentially based on the idea that vegetation spontaneously establishes and stabilizes itself in tandem with use. However, a lot of work was done with the seeding of local wild plants and ornamental perennials were sown to increase the acceptance of the areas. Since the early 2000s, the Department of Landscaping, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development has been studying the urban ecological value of the areas in terms of which species have asserted themselves in the recording areas. The tour shows the areas around the university, which resemble typical urban open spaces in terms of their conditions and exemplify the dynamic behavior of spontaneous and artificially established urban vegetation. On this basis, indications for a vegetation development adapted to climate change are given.

The tour will be used by the members of the Sustain Group to plan a "Sustain Tour". The idea is to create better visibility of sustainable infrastructure on campus, such as areas with amenity quality / green courtyards, biodiversity hotspots, bicycle parking facilities, power supply via PV systems, drinking water dispensers, etc., as well as to provide a site-specific overview of the multitude of facilities, projects, research and teaching offers in the field of sustainability. In addition, the tour will show facilities and contact persons in the field of sustainability, start-ups, cooperation partners as well as groups and initiatives.
