On Wednesday, February 11, 2015, the Medieval History Department invites you to participate in the workshop "Gender and Authority in Medieval Society", which will take place from 2 p.m. s. t. to 8 p.m. in the International House of the University of Kassel.
The event, conceived together with students, is tailored to the discussion with Dr. Susan Johns from the University of Bangor (UK) and her evening lecture. The workshop is the conclusion and highlight of the seminar "The Queen in the High Middle Ages" and offers students, young academics and experienced scholars the opportunity to discuss concepts of women's and gender studies and to put their own ideas up for discussion in an international setting.
One morning session is reserved for students of the seminar. The public lectures in the afternoon will deal with projections, practices and possibilities of action of noble women in different political and familial contexts in order to explore gendered notions of domination. The spatial and temporal focus will be on England and the Roman-German Empire in the period between 1000 and 1500 in order to identify the factors, situations and actions that determined the social, dominant and cultural positions and practices of these protagonists.

In the winter semester 2013/14, a new series of workshops on strategic career planning for young female academics at the University of Kassel will be offered as part of the expansion of the central further education courses under gender equality aspects. In the mostly 2-day workshops, female early career researchers can prepare important career steps and strengthen and further develop interdisciplinary skills. Lectures
Discourses against equality, gender studies and the freedom of gender expression are booming. From Vatican City to Washington and Rio, from Kisslegg to Schnellroda, there are alliances against the enemy images of 'gender ideology' and 'early sexualization'. They claim to protect 'nature', 'people' and 'family' against 'decay'. Their protagonists long for security and clear boundaries, fear blurring and deconstruction: they propagate an anti-queer ideology.
What causes people to get caught up in the web of this ideology - and how can political education encourage them to go their own way beyond rigid norms and authoritarian desires? Author Hannah Engelmann explores this question on various levels. She examines the roots of antique ideology in the field of economics and in the way we become subjects and identify with collectives. She holds discussions with practitioners of political education from trade union, queer and anti-racist contexts. The result is concrete ideas for educational work that contributes to a safer society for all by unsettling collective identifications.
Antique ideology (reading & discussion) January 29, 2020, 6-8 p.m. Seminar room 3, Campus Center

The content:
The revolts in various Arab countries were characterized by a broad spectrum of actors, interests and expectations with regard to "bread, freedom, dignity". However, the hopes for more democracy and the expectation of more gender equality were undermined by the escalation of violence and the confrontation with political Islam. The event will shed light on the developments in Egypt and Syria as examples, with a particular focus on the opportunities and dangers for gender democracy.
