How platforms influence privacy and self-determination

Many people's everyday lives are increasingly shaped by trading in (their) data. The project "Data Economies: Consumer Relationships and Business Models", funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, shows how the business models of platforms are forming their own market forms and organizational structures.

It also explains what this means for privacy and self-determination of platform users. The results of this collaborative project between art and science are presented on the website datenoekonomien.net.

In the visualization of the results of the project "Data Economies: Consumer Relationships and Business Models," the expertise of the Department of Sociological Theory at the Kassel University (Prof. Jörn Lamla) and the Department of New Media at Kassel University of the Arts (Prof. Joel Baumann, represented by Mike Huntemann) was incorporated.

This cooperation is already the second joint project in which artistic-research collaboration has taken place. In the previous project Privacy Arena and the resulting exhibition and website, the sociologists Barbara Büttner, Dr. Carsten Ochs, Fabian Pittroff and the artist Mike Huntemann were involved in addition to the two department heads Prof. Jörn Lamla and Prof. Joel Baumann and were now able to contribute this knowledge to the follow-up project. Thus, it was especially this ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration and the resulting experiential knowledge of the participating collaborators that enabled a productive research interweaving of art and science.
