Be a Knight…

… at Weidelsburg Castle near Wolfhagen-Ippinghausen

You can reach the castle via the A44 motorway (take the exit to Zierenberg and follow the B251 until you reach Wolfhagen-Ippinghausen). Road signs will direct you to the castle from there. The parking lot is located in the woods at the foot of the castle. The path to the castle is about 1 km up a moderately steep hill, which should be no problem, even for small children. Once you reach the top, there are plenty of places to enjoy a picnic and there is a small restaurant that is generally open on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. There is a lovely view of the area from the eastern part of the castle and the castle walls are a perfect place to play hide and seek. More information

… at Heiligenberg Castle near Gensungen.

The castle can be reached via the A7 motorway (take the exit to Melsungen and the route is well marked from there). The path to the castle is on the opposite side of the exit and it is possible to park below the castle. There is a restaurant and plenty of space to have a picnic and let the children play. More information

… at Hanstein Castle near Bornhagen

Drive to Witzenhausen and then take the B80 to Hohengandern. Drive to Bornhagen from there. There is a parking lot near the castle. Opening hours are 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. from April to October. From December to March, opening hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at weekends and holidays only. There is an entrance fee. Hanstein Castle is a very well-maintained ruin and there is even a view of Ludwigstein Castle from the tower. More information

… at Ludwigsstein Castle near Witzenhausen

Drive to Witzenhausen and then take the B27 towards Bad Sooden-Allendorf. There are signs leading to the castle and a parking lot below. Guided tour prices are as follows: EUR 2 for adults and EUR 1.50 for children. It is also possible to arrange an overnight stay. More information

Wildpark Edersee

The "Wildpark Edersee" is visible from the road between Edertal-Hemfurt and Edertal-Bringhausen. The park is home to as many as 200 animals including deer and wolves. Park staff put on a daily show featuring large birds of prey. More information

Tierpark Sababurg

The "Tierpark Sababurg" is located approximately 12km from Hofgeismar. It is home to at least 80 animal species and features an otter habitat as well as a bird of prey area. More information

Tierpark Rose

In the "Tierpark Rose" it is possible to see emus (as well as many other species of birds), raccoons, apes, cows, horses and goats. Pony and carriage rides are available with prior reservations and the forest restaurant offers home cooked meals at reasonable prices. More information

What else is there to do?

Barefoot path in Nienhagen

The barefoot path can be reached via Nieste (head towards Nienhagen). There are signs directing you to the path, which is approximately 2.5 km long through different types of terrain. There is no entrance fee and the path is open throughout the year.  Several climbing facilities are also available.  More information
