Number of first-semester students also increased this summer semester

The trend of rising first-year student numbers at the University of Kassel is continuing. According to preliminary figures, more than 15 percent more young people are enrolled in the first study semester in the summer semester 2025 than in the previous summer semester. This is the third semester in a row that the number of new students has increased. The number of students in the standard period of study has also increased.

Once again, more young people are starting their studies in Kassel.

"Even if the summer semester figures are less significant than the winter semester statistics, this is a pleasing development," commented the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Ute Clement. "We have also done a lot to achieve this, modernized our study programme and expanded our course marketing." In the coming winter semester, the University of Kassel expects a further boost from nine new degree programs in the field of sustainability. The application period starts on June 1.

According to the figures now available, 1,094 people are enrolled in the first study semester. This is 146 more than in summer semester 2024 and 211 more than in summer semester 2023. In the previous winter semester 2024/2025, the number of first-semester students also increased from 4,416 to 4,652. The number of first-semester students is regularly much lower in the summer semesters than in the winter semesters, as fewer degree programmes start.

A total of exactly 19,935 students are enrolled in the current summer semester 2025. Last summer semester, the total number was slightly higher at 20,106. The fact that the total number has fallen slightly despite the increase in first-semester students can be explained by the high number of graduating students.

The number of students in the standard period of study rose from 11,260 to 11,555, the number of international students from 2,874 to 3,029. All figures are provisional; the final statistics are expected to be available in June. The lecture period started last Tuesday.
