Science for coffee: lectures on biodiversity, AI and more

The popular series of coffee talks at UNI:Lokal will continue in the summer semester 2025. In short talks, researchers from the University of Kassel present their topics to interested members of the public - briefly and compactly and, of course, free of charge. The talks of around 15 minutes are aimed at anyone who wants to start the evening with an interesting input on current topics. Sweet snacks and drinks are also available free of charge. The coffee talks take place centrally in the city center at UNI:Lokal (Wilhelmsstraße 21) on Wednesdays or Thursdays at 4 pm from May 7.

Biodiversity is the subject of one of the lectures.

To kick off the series, members of the public can find out about the heat supply of the future in a short lecture by Prof. Dr. Clemens Hoffmann (Faculty of Electrical Engineering/Computer Science). On 14 May, those interested can immerse themselves in cryptography when Prof. Dr. Sebastian Petersen (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) will provide information on the science of secret messages. On the occasion of Biodiversity Day on 22 May, Prof. Dr. Miriam Athmann (Faculty of Ecological Agricultural Sciences) will explain why a species-rich environment affects us all.

The topic of the coffee talk on June 11 by Dr.-Ing. Philipp Otter (Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering) is climate-resilient water supply in Kassel. Dr. Maxi Nebel (Faculty of Economics) will conclude the series on 18 June and give an insight into how intimate communication with artificial intelligence can take place within a secure framework in terms of data protection law.

In the UNI:Lokal in the city center, the University of Kassel presents research from the university to a wide audience in line with the motto "Science for everyone" in order to promote exchange between science and the public. In the open space for events and exhibitions, visitors are invited to enter into a dialog with researchers about current scientific topics and to discuss aspects.

The coffee talks also address socially relevant topics that are being researched at the University of Kassel and convey them in a way that is relevant to everyday life. The short lectures show the broad spectrum of research and teaching at the university, which aims to develop solutions for a future worth living.
