Sustainability: the die is cast

Using a new Sustain Tour, the Green Office provides an overview of how the University of Kassel is contributing to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The kick-off took place on May 20 in the Max Kade House (formerly CampusClub).

The colorful, printed cubes made of concrete with a smooth wooden seat have recently become impossible to miss. At 17 stations spread across the entire Holländischer Platz campus, they are used to vividly illustrate the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, supplemented by display boards. The special thing about it: at each station, interviews with researchers, institutions and initiatives related to sustainability can be listened to via a web app. The interviewees report on their work and how they directly contribute to achieving the SDGs.

The Sustain Tour of the campus thus highlights the diverse sustainability activities and projects at the University of Kassel. Students and employees of the university contributed to the success of the project: it was accompanied by the start-up kinferno (formerly historyHYPE), the Institute of Structural Engineering, the Department of Transport Planning and Transport Systems, the University Library, the AStA, University Sports and the SDG+Lab. The striking concrete seating cubes were made from eco-concrete as part of a seminar at Faculty 14 Civil and Environmental Engineering (Department of Construction Materials and Construction Chemistry). In the course "Building with inorganic binders" (Dr. Alexander Wetzel), students developed alow-CO2 concrete and produced the seating elements under strict sustainability criteria.

The University of Kassel has developed a distinctive profile in research and teaching with regard to sustainability topics and offers numerous Bachelor's degree programmes in this field:

  • Sustainability Sciences - Sustainability Studies
  • Business Law with integrated sustainability studies
  • Sustainability Communication
  • Philosophy - Sustainability - Criticism
  • Chemistry and Mathematics for Sustainability
  • Chemistry for sustainability
  • Sustainable materials and processes

  • Minor in Sustainability Studies

There are also two Master's degree programmes:

  • Agriculture, Ecology and Societies (Master)
  • Sustainable Electromobility

Applications for the winter semester are possible from June 1 (exceptions: Sustainable Electrical Engineering Systems and Sustainable Electromobility, both from. July 1)
