Who is the preliminary chemistry course for?

The preliminary chemistry course is aimed at all students in their first year of study who are taking subjects with chemistry components. It is intended to refresh school knowledge in the subject of chemistry before the actual start of lectures and thus to facilitate entry into the chemistry modules. We strongly recommend participation if the last chemistry class was some time ago.

When does the preliminary course take place?

For the winter semester 2022/23, the Chemistry Pre-Course is expected to be offered as a face-to-face course from Oct. 4 - Oct. 13, 2022, and as an online course regardless of dates.

Chemistry and math prerequisite course - What do I do if there is a scheduling conflict?

Since there is a lot of calculus to be done in the chemistry modules, taking a prerequisite mathematics course is strongly recommended.

If lecturers advise you not to take the preliminary chemistry course in favor of the preliminary mathematics course, you should still enroll in the preliminary chemistry course and use the materials for self-study.

Will I receive credit for the course?

If you are studying a Bachelor's degree program without chemistry components, the participation in the preliminary course Chemistry together with the successfully completed exercises on General Chemistry for Bachelor Biology in WiSe 22/23 can be credited in the area of interdisciplinary key competencies.

The preliminary course Chemistry can be attended by students of the teaching degree Biology as an alternative to the lecture "General Chemistry" (FB 1018.3055) in the 1st semester. It is strongly recommended that students also actively participate in the "Exercises in General Chemistry" (FB 1018.3162) in the winter semester.

In the study program plusMINT, the preliminary course in chemistry can be credited in the MINT accompanying program if the exercises in the Moodle course "plusMINT - preliminary course in chemistry WiSe" are successfully completed in the winter semester. In support of this, students can participate in the exercise hours for general chemistry for BSc. biology and biology teaching degree (FB1018.3162w).
