University of Kassel signs the Magna Charta Universitatum

On 16 October, university chancellor Dr. Oliver Fromm entered the name of Kassel University in the Magna Charta Universitatum during a festive ceremony in Hamilton, Canada. The Magna Charta Universitatum is a manifesto. The universities signing commit themselves to fundamental values such as freedom of science and teaching and institutional independence. This year, 12 new universities were added to the list. Thus, 900 universities from more than 80 countries have signed the Magna Charta Universitatum by now.

"The aim of the Magna Charta is to build a worldwide community of universities that share common values and are committed to defending these in an increasingly difficult environment. With this signature, we want to demonstrate that we see ourselves as part of this international network," said Chancellor Dr. Oliver Fromm, who travelled to Canada, representing university president Prof. Dr. Reiner Finkeldey.

"Universities play an important role in promoting and developing relations between the European countries and throughout the whole world - as University of Kassel, we want to take part in building international relations and being a place for a vibrant culture of discussions," said Prof. Finkeldey, who seized the initiative to include the Kassel University in the Magna Charta Universitatem. "At the same time, we as a university want to actively oppose all attempts to restrict the freedom of science, which is threatened in many countries of the world and also increasingly so in Europe, unfortunately.”

The Magna Charta Universitatum originated in 1988 in Bologna and was initially signed by 388 presidents and vice-chancellors. Next to the University of Kassel, the Parisian University of Sorbonne and the British University of York will be added to the list this year, as well.
