In recent years, digital technology has been discussed both in its potential to promote or to demote gender equity. This field of tension, between empowerment and threat of amplifying inequalities, is explored in this contribution. Moreover, this chapter views digital humanism through the lens of intersectional gender research. After discussing the historic relation between gender and humanism, concepts and terminology of gender research and feminist theory are explained in more detail. Following this, the interaction of gender and technology is illustrated through examples. Finally, the lessons learned part contains suggestions and calls for action important for a more inclusive and equitable digital transformation.

Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass gegenwärtige Herausforderungen der Datenökonomie neben der angemessenen Verwendung von Daten auch Aspekte der gerechten Verteilung von Erlösen, die Manipulation durch Algorithmen oder die Beeinflussung der politischen Meinungsbildung durch Plattformen betreffen, lotet das vorliegende White Paper Möglichkeiten der fairen Gestaltung datenökonomischer Geschäftsmodelle aus. Die erarbeiteten Instrumente und Analysen zur Unterstützung einer fairen Geschäftsmodellgestaltung basieren auf Ergebnissen des vom BMBF geförderten Projekts „Faire digitale Dienste: Ko-Valuation in der Gestaltung datenökonomischer Geschäftsmodelle (FAIRDIENSTE)“. Um ein analytisch gehaltvolles Fairness-Verständnis zu entwickeln, das auch für die konkrete datenökonomische Gestaltungspraxis innovative und wirtschaftlich tragfähige Alternativen zu gegenwärtigen Geschäftsmodellen freizulegen vermag, wurden in FAIRDIENSTE verschiedene Ansätze der kooperativen Wertvermittlung (im Folgenden auch „Ko-Valuation“) erprobt, die wir als Verrechnung, Design und Kultivierung bezeichnen: Erstens wurde untersucht, inwiefern sich unterschiedliche Werte in eine ökonomische Sprache der Preise übersetzen und fair verrechnen lassen (Verrechnung). Zweitens wurde herausgearbeitet, wie Wertkonflikte durch technische und regulative Designs kanalisiert werden können (Design). Drittens wurde geprüft, inwiefern die öffentliche Aushandlung von Wertkonflikten, z.B. über Social-Media-Elemente, gefördert werden kann, um zu einer Kultur der Fairness unter den Nutzerinnen und Nutzern beizutragen (Kultivierung). Diese Perspektiven wurden anhand der Fairness-Herausforderungen des digitalen Journalismus geschärft und auf ihre Tragfähigkeit geprüft. Die Fachtagungen HDI (Hochschuldidaktik Informatik) beschäftigen sich mit den unterschiedlichen Aspekten informatischer Bildung im Hochschulbereich. Neben den allgemeinen Themen wie verschiedenen Lehr- und Lernformen, dem Einsatz von Informatiksystemen in der Hochschullehre oder Fragen der Gewinnung von geeigneten Studierenden, deren Kompetenzerwerb oder auch der Betreuung der Studierenden widmet sich die HDI immer auch einem Schwerpunktthema. Im Jahr 2021 war dies die Berücksichtigung von Diversität in der Lehre. Diskutiert wurden beispielsweise die Einbeziehung von besonderen fachlichen und überfachlichen Kompetenzen Studierender, der Unterstützung von Durchlässigkeit aus nichtakademischen Berufen, aber auch die Gestaltung inklusiver Lehr- und Lernszenarios, Aspekte des Lebenslangen Lernens oder sich an die Diversität von Studierenden adaptierte oder adaptierende Lehrsysteme. Dieser Band enthält ausgewählte Beiträge der 9. Fachtagung 2021, die in besonderer Weise die Konferenz und die dort diskutierten Themen repräsentieren.

Diversity is a term that is broadly used and challenging for informatics research, development and education. Diversity concerns may relate to unequal participation, knowledge and methodology, curricula, institutional planning etc. For a lot of these areas, measures, guidelines and best practices on diversity awareness exist. A systemic, sustainable impact of diversity measures on informatics is still largely missing. In this paper I explore what working with diversity and gender concepts in informatics entails, what the main challenges are and provide thoughts for improvement. The paper includes definitions of diversity and intersectionality, reflections on the disciplinary basis of informatics and practical implications of integrating diversity in informatics research and development. In the final part, two concepts from the social sciences and the humanities, the notion of “third space”/hybridity and the notion of “feminist ethics of care”, serve as a lens to foster more sustainable ways of working with diversity in informatics.

Current approaches to the design and development of digital business models (DBMs) overlook the multiple, and sometimes conflicting, logics of actors with which the focal firm seeks to co-create value. The lack of integrating stakeholders’ logics into DBMs has potentially detrimental and unintended ethical and social consequences. By collaboratively conducting an action research project with a digital publisher and drawing on participatory and value-sensitive design principles, we develop a novel approach for designing DBMs that integrates actors’ multiple logics by design. We contribute to literature by introducing a new approach highlighting DBMs’ inherent social aspects and furthering our understanding of multiple logics’ role in DBMs. Practitioners gain a concrete DBM design method preempting conflict.

Lattices are a commonly used structure for the representation and analysis of relational and ontological knowledge. In particular, the analysis of these requires a decomposition of a large and high-dimensional lattice into a set of understandably large parts. With the present work we propose /ordinal motifs/ as analytical units of meaning. We study these ordinal substructures (or standard scales) through (full) scale-measures of formal contexts from the field of formal concept analysis. We show that the underlying decision problems are NP-complete and provide results on how one can incrementally identify ordinal motifs to save computational effort. Accompanying our theoretical results, we demonstrate how ordinal motifs can be leveraged to retrieve basic meaning from a medium sized ordinal data set.

Participation in the data economy is prone to unjust power imbalances. Individuals function as mere data sources and are left out of decisions on how, when, and where personal data is accumulated and processed. In this paper, we translate Arnsteins' `Ladder of Citizen Participation' to the field of the data economy to offer a conceptual lens to tackle power imbalances' underlying structures. For this, we derived assumptions from the application's ecosystem. We propose to encase the lowest rungs of the ladder with the term of involuntary participation and frame individuals as digital Citizens to avoid a mere focus on the economic dimension of participation. Building on this, we translate the eight rungs of Arnstein's original ladder to the new application field of the data economy through examples and design affordances corresponding with differing degrees of digital citizens' data agency. Eventually, we contemplate implications for socio-technical design resulting from the re-conceptualization of the `ladder' and formulate future research.

Sketching out initial research directions and implications for explainable AI design, it suggests that explainability from a feminist perspective would include the fostering of response-ability - the capacity to critically evaluate and respond to AI systems - and would centre marginalised perspectives.

This paper presents a series of feminist epistemological concepts as tools for developing critical, more accountable, and contextualised approaches to machine learning systems design. Namely, we suggest that the methods of situated knowledges or situating, figurations or figuring, diffraction or diffracting, and critical fabulation or speculation can be productively actualised in the field of machine learning systems design. We also suggest that the meta-method for doing this actualisation requires not so much translation but transposition - a creative and critical adaptation to speak to machine learning contexts.

Die Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) der Vereinten Nationen streben anhand von SDG 5 danach, die Gleichheit der Geschlechter im globalen Kontext herzustellen. Wir zeigen, dass der aktuelle, global angelegte Nachhaltigkeitsdiskurs nicht nur blinde Flecken im Hinblick auf die konsequente Bekämpfung geschlechtsspezifischer Ungleichheiten aufweist, sondern auch einen wenig reflektierten Umgang mit der digitalen Transformation pflegt. Mögliche Ansätze zur Bewältigung des identifizierten Spannungsfeldes sehen wir in einer gendersensiblen IT-Gestaltung, einem digitalen Gleichstellungsgesetz und der konsequenten Bewertung von Folgen der globalen Nachhaltigkeitspolitik und -forschung im Hinblick auf Diskriminierung.

This article discusses the role that algorithmic thinking and management play in health care and the kind of exclusions this might create. We argue that evidence-based medicine relies on research and data to create pathways for patient journeys. Coupled with data-based algorithmic prediction tools in health care, they establish what could be called health care algorithmics—a mode of management of healthcare that produces forms of algorithmic governmentality. Relying on a critical posthumanist perspective, we show how healthcare algorithmics is contingent on the way authority over bodies is produced and how predictive health care algorithms can reproduce inequalities of the worlds from which they are made, centreing possible futures on existing normativities regulated through algorithmic biopower. In contrast to that, we explore posthuman speculative ethics as a way to challenge understanding of ‘ethics’ and ‘care’ in healthcare algorithmics. We suggest some possible avenues towards working speculative ethics into health care while still being critically attentive to algorithmic modes of management and prediction in health care.

In this article Lila Athanasiadou and Goda Klumbytė engage in a conversation with Antoinette Rouvroy to revisit Guattari’s "Three Ecologies" and discuss their dynamics in and for the digital age. While a lot of the discourses on algorithms and digital future invoke catastrophic imaginaries of totalizing control, this conversation works with a propositional format, teasing out affirmative politics by pointing to spaces of potentiality within the environmental, the social and the mental realm. Starting from the environmental ecology and thinking of data as a waste, Rouvroy discusses planetary exhaustion as the result of the depletion of natural resources, forced labour practices and the assumption that data hold the answers to the problems posed by global capital. Proposing a space for material experimentation, she speculates on the potential of emerging subjectivities that remain irreducible to data flows. Within social ecology, Rouvroy advocates for the urgency to center digital policy as the space in which the new forms of institutions emerge in order to reorient the power of computation towards the commons. Lastly, within the mental ecology, Rouvroy reconceptualizes the legal subject as a performance that operates within the proliferation of asignifying data signs, reimagining a “we” beyond the gathering of reductions.

This chapter interrogates ``data justice'' through the lenses of feminist and legal studies to reconfigure data justice as a multidimensional, interdisciplinary practice in IT-design. First, we look at how data justice is framed in feminist research and feminist-informed critical data and design perspectives, as well as how it is conceptualised in law, particularly in the context of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and legal debates around privacy in Europe. Second, we recommend conceptual shifts, design approaches, and legal measures towards data justice. Our chapter contributes to new perspectives in critical data studies by showing that data justice can provide a conceptual ground that serves both the needs of legal formalisation as well as feminist imperatives of contextualisation and specificity.

First, we look at how data justice is framed in feminist research and feminist-informed critical data and design perspectives, as well as how it is conceptualised in law, particularly in the context of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and legal debates around privacy in Europe. Second, we recommend conceptual shifts, design approaches, and legal measures towards data justice. Our chapter contributes to new perspectives in critical data studies by showing that data justice can provide a conceptual ground that serves both the needs of legal formalisation as well as feminist imperatives of contextualisation and specificity. %@ 978-3-030-96180-0

Starting from the need for responsible research and innovation in computing, this paper addresses the challenges that come from working with the social sciences and the humanities in human-computer interaction. In this paper, we attempt to move beyond interdisciplinarity towards transdisciplinarity. In particular, we explore concepts of hybridity and third spaces that are used in HCI participatory design practices. We trace back the postcolonial, decolonial and feminist scholarship basis of these concepts and look at how their critical potential can inform a conceptualization of what we call hybrid methodology in its own right. For this, we present three case studies. The first two work with experimental spaces in artistic research and research through design, the third works with intersectional critical and speculative methodologies in machine learning systems design. The first two case studies center around the discussions of disciplinary openness through experimentation as a way of moving beyond interdisciplinarity towards transdisciplinarity; the third zooms in on the role of critical theoretical knowledge from the social sciences and the humanities as knowledge that enables new orientations in research and design of IT systems.

This paper investigates how intersectional critical theoretical concepts from social sciences and humanities research can be worked with in machine learning systems design. It does so by presenting a case study of a series of speculative design workshops, conducted in 2021. These workshops drew on intersectional feminist methodologies to construct interdisciplinary interventions in the design of machine learning systems, towards more inclusive, accountable, and contextualized systems design. The concepts of “situating/situated knowledges”, "figuration", "diffraction", and “critical fabulation/speculation” were taken up as theoretical and methodological tools for concept-led design workshops. This paper presents the design framework of the workshops and highlights tensions and possibilities with regards to interdisciplinary machine learning systems design towards more inclusive, contextualized, and accountable systems. It discusses the role that critical theoretical concepts can play in a design process and shows how such concepts can work as methodological tools that nonetheless require an open-ended experimental space to function. It presents insights and discussion points regarding what it means to work with critical intersectional knowledge that is inextricably connected to its historical and socio-political roots, and how this reframes what it might mean to design fair and accountable systems.

Participatory Design means recognizing that those who will be affected by a future technology should have an active say in its creation. Yet, despite continuous interest in involving people as future users and consumers into designing novel and innovative future technology, participatory approaches in technology design remain relatively underdeveloped in the German HCI community. This article brings together the diversity of voices, domains, perspectives, approaches, and methods that collectively shape Participatory Design in Germany. In the following, we (1) outline our understanding of participatory practice and how it is different from mere user involvement; (2) reflect current issues of participatory and fair technology design within the German Participatory Design community; and (3) discuss tensions relevant to the field, that we expect to arise in the future, and which we derived from our 2021 workshop through a speculative method. We contribute an introduction and an overview of current themes and a speculative outlook on future issues of Participatory Design in Germany. It is meant to inform, provoke, inspire and, ultimately, invite participation within the wider Computer Science community.

A person's name embodies identity. During user studies in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), persons are often renamed (pseudonymization) to hide their identity for privacy and ethical reasons. Pseudonymization occurs mostly as a “silent” affair of due diligence. Researchers barely give substantial information to the process nor reveal a reflexive position nor acknowledge the underlying elements of power and identity negotiation. As HCI advances in mitigating the design of biased technologies and breaking oppressive structures, I argue, in this paper, the need for the field to re-consider research requirements such as pseudonymization as possible to embody oppressive structures and erase identity. I present a review of papers from the 2020 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI ‘20) that illustrate how silent the HCI approach is. My argument is built on Critical Race Theory, questioning the objectivity of such technical requirements. I use personal narratives to bolster this argument, ending with a call to the HCI community to acknowledge the power and privilege in renaming participants with three recommendations for consideration.

The advancing awareness of diversity in HCI is touted as laudable in addressing inequality and the digital divide. This progress however has not been reflected in HCI research. Diversity in HCI has focused on giving underrepresented users voice and confronting homogeneity. By increasing representations, though a diversity affinity is immediately visible, the deconstruction of institutionalized prejudice fails. Additionally, underrepresented voices have the unsurmountable task of representing their group. These approaches to diversity become tokenistic fixes failing to tackle the systemic causes of inequality.

This workshop draws on feminist and other critical methodologies to construct interdisciplinary interventions in the design of machine learning systems. Theoretical concepts of “figuration”, “situating/situated knowledge”, “critical fabulation/speculation,” and “diffraction” are explored through hands-on experimentation to imagine and design machine learning systems in a more situated, inclusive, contextualize and accountable way. Through this “theory turned practice” approach the workshop aims to address systemic socio-cultural biases and develop more socially responsible frameworks of design. The workshop provides space for building a network for future research on interdisciplinary machine learning systems design.

ICT can contribute to flexible working, but the question arises if women and men differ in the way they use ICT. Re-analyzing data collected in two diary studies comparing men and women on the length of ICT use, the type of positive and negative events in relation to ICT during the day, on the way home and in the evening, revealed little to no gender differences. We conclude that the occupational role overrides potential differences that might occur due to different gender roles and discuss future research opportunities in this area. For example, the question arises against the background of the gendered division of labor if occupational role and other factors determine ICT use, calling for an intersectional analysis.

Insgesamt zeigen sich bei der Studienfachwahl in Deutschland teilweise große Unterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern. So studieren Frauen deutlich seltener als Männer Fächer im MINT-Bereich, Männer dagegen deutlich seltener Fächer im sozialen Bereich. Der Beitrag stellt die Frage, warum solche Ungleichheiten trotz zahlreicher bildungspolitischer Interventionen stabil bleiben und sich auf der Ebene der individuellen Entscheidungen entsprechend konventionelle Orientierungen zeigen. Zunächst werden verschiedene Einflussfaktoren hinsichtlich der Studienfachwahl unter einer sozialisations- und entwicklungstheoretischen Perspektive in den Blick genommen. Im Anschluss daran werden die beharrlichen Unterschiede in den individuellen Orientierungen und Entscheidungen von Mädchen und Jungen aus einer geschlechtertheoretischen Perspektive als strukturelle Ungleichheiten eingeordnet. Zuletzt werden die mit diesen strukturellen Ungleichheiten zusammenhängenden Dynamiken von Öffnungen und Schließungen eines sozialen Feldes am Beispiel des Fachs Informatik weiter konkretisiert und es wird gezeigt, dass Veränderungen nur greifen können, wenn eine Fachkultur sich im Hinblick auf systematische Öffnungen wandelt. Im Fazit wird dafür plädiert, die verschiedenen Forschungsstränge und Theorieperspektiven, die im Beitrag aufgenommen werden, in Zukunft noch stärker zu verbinden.

Seit Jahrzehnten wird die geschlechtliche Verteilung von Studierenden in MINT bzw. der Informatik aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick genommen. Aus Sicht geschlechtertheoretischer Forschungen werden dafür unter anderem geschlechtliche Codierungen der Fächer gesehen, in denen sich alltägliches Geschlechterwissen und strukturelle Ungleichheiten manifestieren. In Bildern und Annahmen, die Schüler*innen und Studierende über die jeweiligen Fächer haben, werden diese vergeschlechtlichten Codierungen sichtbar. Der Beitrag fasst Ergebnisse ausgewählter Literatur zu Bildern von Informatik zusammen. Sie zeigen, wie die Befragten Informatik als männliches, weißes und westliches Fach konstruieren, welches Zugangs- und Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten mindestens einschränkt und ‚das Andere‘, also beispielsweise Frauen/Weiblichkeit, alles nicht-westliche, nicht-weiße – bzw. was diesen Begriffen zugeschrieben wird – abwertet. Beiträge zu Informatikbildern laufen jedoch Gefahr, bestehende Bilder zu reproduzieren. Deshalb werden in der untersuchten Literatur Leerstellen und Perspektiven aufgezeigt, die zu einer intersektionalen, reflektierten Forschung über Informatik(bilder) beitragen können.

Aus Sicht geschlechtertheoretischer Forschungen werden dafür unter anderem geschlechtliche Codierungen der Fächer gesehen, in denen sich alltägliches Geschlechterwissen und strukturelle Ungleichheiten manifestieren. In Bildern und Annahmen, die Schüler*innen und Studierende über die jeweiligen Fächer haben, werden diese vergeschlechtlichten Codierungen sichtbar. Der Beitrag fasst Ergebnisse ausgewählter Literatur zu Bildern von Informatik zusammen. Sie zeigen, wie die Befragten Informatik als männliches, weißes und westliches Fach konstruieren, welches Zugangs- und Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten mindestens einschränkt und ‚das Andere‘, also beispielsweise Frauen/Weiblichkeit, alles nicht-westliche, nicht-weiße – bzw. was diesen Begriffen zugeschrieben wird – abwertet. Beiträge zu Informatikbildern laufen jedoch Gefahr, bestehende Bilder zu reproduzieren. Deshalb werden in der untersuchten Literatur Leerstellen und Perspektiven aufgezeigt, die zu einer intersektionalen, reflektierten Forschung über Informatik(bilder) beitragen können.

Identity aspects such as gender, race, culture, and socio-economic status should be considered when technologies are designed with and for persons [9]. HCI research in ageing populations can benefit from considering the complexity of identity, use and context of older persons. This short paper draws attention to gender as an aspect of identity in working with ageing populations. It presents results from an interview study with elderly women who live alone in Germany. This study is part of a larger research project dedicated to innovating smart home technologies with and for elderly women who live alone. The research project has comprised of an “exploratory getting-to know each other” session, use experience of a smart speaker and interview studies. This paper presents insights from semi-structured interviews with 7 elderly women who live alone. These insights are also presented as design considerations for smart home technology for elderly women living alone. The study is the basis for further work with the elderly women, which are co-creation sessions to design smart home devices and develop prototypes.

Advances in smart home technological innovation over the years has seen an increase in consumer interests. However, research contexts for smart homes tend to skew towards “traditional”living and housing situations. Through my Ph.D. research, I raise awareness of the need to consider other user contexts and living situations. I do this by exploring opportunities for smart home innovation with elderly women who live alone. I work with the elderly women to understand their values, needs, and collaboratively create new smart home devices. The outcome of my research would be smart home devices that support the lives and contexts of elderly women living alone.

We live in a world that is increasingly shaped through computational technology. The expansion and pervasiveness of computing brings along opportunities and challenges for the field of HCI. New application domains evolve and technological advances pose novel interaction possibilities. But with computing's shaping power comes also the need for increased responsibility and attention to the societal, political and ecological impact of technology. In this conceptual paper, new materialist thinking is employed to locate these societal etc. aspects as inextricably enmeshed within computing research and development. New materialism is a multi-vocal, cross-disciplinary field of doing-thinking. In contrast to Western dichotomic tradition, a monistic, post-anthropocentric perspective is provided and matter as an active agent in world-making is acknowledged. Central to this paper is the questioning of the human and computer dichotomy at the core of the field of HCI. For this, a material-semiotic perspective on human-computer interaction is elaborated upon. Furthermore, the paradigm of interaction is revisited and reworked as a conception of agential intra-action, a term coined by physicist Karen Barad. From this interrogation of dichotomies and the notion of intra-action follow further conceptual shifts that are discussed as productive for the future of HCI, namely responsibility as specification of ethical agency and performativity in contrast to representationalism.

In this paper we interrogate the practices of imagining in human-computer interaction (HCI), particularly in scenario building (SBE) and persona construction. We discuss the philosophical premises of HCI imaginings in rationalism, cognitivism and phenomenology, and we propose (feminist) new materialist philosophy as an enriching perspective that helps generate a holistic, relational perspective of users, imaginaries and technologies. In the end we explore the method of figurations as a potential tool for HCI design.

This paper investigates how Algorithmic Experience (AX) can be used as a conceptual tool to help make algorithms and experiences of them visible through systems design and how interactions might be designed in order to elicit conscious and critical examination. Can algorithmic systems be positioned as critical artifacts? If so, to what extent? The paper reflects on interactions between users and the Social Privilege Estimator– a social scoring system based on facial recognition and classification that was built as a critical design artifact in order to raise awareness of existing inequalities and adverse effects of facial recognition systems. We argue that critical design can and should be used for AX and human-algorithm interaction design in order to support algorithmic literacy and critical capacity of the users and we suggest some conceptual reframings of AX towards this goal.

This paper investigates how Algorithmic Experience (AX) can be used as a conceptual tool to help make algorithms and experiences of them visible through systems design and how interactions might be designed in order to elicit conscious and critical examination. Can algorithmic systems be positioned as critical artifacts? If so, to what extent? The paper reflects on interactions between users and the Social Privilege Estimator– a social scoring system based on facial recognition and classification that was built as a critical design artifact in order to raise awareness of existing inequalities and adverse effects of facial recognition systems. We argue that critical design can and should be used for AX and human-algorithm interaction design in order to support algorithmic literacy and critical capacity of the users and we suggest some conceptual reframings of AX towards this goal.

There are gaps in understanding in and between those who design systems of AI/ ML, those who critique them, and those positioned between these discourses. This gap can be defined in multiple ways - e.g. methodological, epistemological, linguistic, or cultural. To bridge this gap requires a set of translations: the generation of a collaborative space and a new set of shared sensibilities that traverse disciplinary boundaries. This workshop aims to explore translations across multiple fields, and translations between theory and practice, as well as how interdisciplinary work could generate new operationalizable approaches. We define 'knowledge' as a social product (L. Code) which requires fair and broad epistemic cooperation in its generation, development, and dissemination. As a "marker for truth" (B. Williams) and therefore a basis for action, knowledge circulation sustains the systems of power which produce it in the first place (M. Foucault). Enabled by epistemic credence, authority or knowledge, epistemic power can be an important driver of, but also result from, other (e.g. economic, political) powers. To produce reliable output, our standards and methods should serve us all and exclude no-one. Critical theorists have long revealed failings of epistemic practices, resulting in the marginalization and exclusion of some types of knowledge. How can we cultivate more reflexive epistemic practices in the interdisciplinary research setting of FAT*? We frame this ideal as 'epistemic justice' (M. Geuskens), the positive of 'epistemic injustice', defined by M. Fricker as injustice that exists when people are wronged as a knower or as an epistemic subject. Epistemic justice is the proper use and allocation of epistemic power; the inclusion and balancing of all epistemic sources. As S. Jasanoff reminds us, any authoritative way of seeing must be legitimized in discourse and practice, showing that practices can be developed to value and engage with other viewpoints and possibly reshape our ways of knowing. Our workshop aims to address the following questions: how could critical theory or higher level critiques be translated into and anchored in ML/AI design practices - and vice versa? What kind of cartographies and methodologies are needed in order to identify issues that can act as the basis of collaborative research and design? How can we (un)learn our established ways of thinking for such collaborative work to take place? During the workshop, participants will create, share and explode prototypical workflows of designing, researching and critiquing algorithmic systems. We will identify moments in which translations and interdisciplinary interventions could or should happen in order to build actionable steps and methodological frameworks that advance epistemic justice and are conducive to future interdisciplinary collaboration.

If the Environmental Humanities (EH) matter, an essential concern is whether we can speak of the possibility of a philosopher of literary and ecological identity. This paper discusses the intersection points of the Environmental Humanities to the wider scientific debate. It suggests that the EH are suited to help construct knowledge for sustainable futures. The arrival of the Anthropocene provides opportunities to cross disciplinary boundaries. Ecocriticism investigates the complex and contradictory relationship between humans and the environment in literature. Ideas of citizenship allow space for conversation about civic responsibility and stewardship. Animal studies intervenes deeply across the humanities, which acknowledges the interspecies imaginary. Future techno-scientific developments make us reconsider distinctions between humans, animals, and machines. The concept of the posthuman emphasizes how profound changes will be for all species. Serious questions might best be answered by environmental philosophy, which articulates the impact of the environment on humans. New Materialism explains why matter matters, and has clear implications for the study of the environment. Work in postcolonial and digital media provides a platform to challenge geographic borders as well as reconsider national contexts. Essentially, this paper asserts that the EH is building critical mass, and functions as a lightning rod between the arts and sciences. Such a development has profound consequences for the future of literary studies.

This paper discusses the intersection points of the Environmental Humanities to the wider scientific debate. It suggests that the EH are suited to help construct knowledge for sustainable futures. The arrival of the Anthropocene provides opportunities to cross disciplinary boundaries. Ecocriticism investigates the complex and contradictory relationship between humans and the environment in literature. Ideas of citizenship allow space for conversation about civic responsibility and stewardship. Animal studies intervenes deeply across the humanities, which acknowledges the interspecies imaginary. Future techno-scientific developments make us reconsider distinctions between humans, animals, and machines. The concept of the posthuman emphasizes how profound changes will be for all species. Serious questions might best be answered by environmental philosophy, which articulates the impact of the environment on humans. New Materialism explains why matter matters, and has clear implications for the study of the environment. Work in postcolonial and digital media provides a platform to challenge geographic borders as well as reconsider national contexts. To become effective in the field of computing, gender research must explain its concepts to non-gender studies scholars and to convince them of their relevance. Our title "Making IT Work" claims that both can be done: interlinking gender research and computing, and by that improving IT systems. We present the "Gender-Extended Research and Development" (GERD) model, a process model which combines gender and diversity aspects with all phases of computing research and development. The model with seven phases is a generalization of common process models in computing. Gender/diversity expertise has been condensed into a number of aspects that characterize the social context of computing research. They can be related to and reflected during every phase. This reflection is somewhat operationalized by providing a list of questions for each combination of phase and aspect. Case studies as part of the model illustrate either in what way such reflections may help in research and development or what may happen if no such aspects have been included.

Reproducible experiments are a major requirement for transparent, comparable and verifiable results in the field of human-robot interaction (HRI). Furthermore, a version-controlled and well-structured "ready to deploy" system setup of soft- and hard-ware for an HRI experiment opens up a range of innovative possibilities for interdisciplinary efforts as well as simplified participation of collaborators in the research community. However, making experiments reproducible is not a trivial task. It stems from the lack of agreed upon methodologies, tools and the inherent technical complexity. In this work we present our latest efforts in the context of an international and interdisciplinary research project to enable robotics researchers, software engineers, and social scientists to work together to reproduce a behavioral HRI experiment. The successful reproduction demonstrates that our tool chain approach meets the proposed requirements of the reproducibility problem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time an integrated systemic approach allowed an identical instantiation of a complete HRI experiment at geographically distributed locations.

The reproducibility and objective assessment of a robot's manipulation ability is a crucial topic in robotics. The definition of testing protocols and the automation of such test procedures is challenging. Most evaluation protocols in benchmarks and competitions include not completely standardized interactions of a human/referee and are furthermore influenced by partially subjective criteria across different research areas. A promising and more objective solution is to automate benchmarking protocols for a range of reproducible manipulation tasks. We present an approach that is simplified to the essential elements, in which most of the process and evaluation is automated. The proposed system has low price and effort requirements and allows researchers to compare their robots without placing them side by side. To allow a wide range of robots to be benchmarked all parts will be available open source. In our system, an object is positioned in front of the benchmarked robot by a mobile minirobot that localizes itself on a table according to the individual task's predefined positions. By automating most of the process we ensure that the object locations tested as well as the timings are reproducible and well documented. This approach fosters the objective comparability of robot performances.

The insufficient level of reproducibility of pub-lished experimental results has been identified as acore issuein the field of robotics in recent years. Why is that? First ofall, robotics focuses on the abstract concept of computationand thecreationof technological artifacts, i.e., software thatimplements these concepts. Hence, before actually reproducingan experiment, the subject of investigation must beartificiallycreated, which is non-trivial given the inherent complexity [5].Second, robotics experiments usually include expensive andoften customized hardware setups (robots), that are difficultto operate for non-experts. Finally, there is no agreed uponset of methods in order to setup, execute, or (re-)conduct anexperiment.To this end, we introduce an interdisciplinary and geograph-ically distributed collaboration project that aims at implement-ing good experimental methodology in interdisciplinary roboticsresearch with respect to: a) reproducibility of required technicalartifacts, b) explicit and comprehensible experiment design, c)repeatable/reproducible experiment execution, and d) repro-ducible evaluation of obtained experiment data. In this paper, we present an empirical study with children at the age of 4 and 5 years to reveal whether they engage with a robot in an interaction. For our analysis, we developed a score assessing the interaction level. It consists of emotional involvement, engagement and independence of the child in the interaction. For the interaction, an autonomous system was equipped with a designed dialogic structure. It consisted of a repertoire of (pre-recorded) interaction protocols that a robot can apply in an interaction. The results from the evaluation suggest that the implementation was successful as most of the studied children engaged in the interaction with the robot. The results also reveal some gender differences. The long-term aim of the study is to develop an autonomous system that can be applied in an interaction with young children.
