Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region (REMENA)

The shortage of fossil fuels, rising energy prices and an increasing demand for energy are leading to a rethinking of energy policy in the MENA region. Renewable energies and energy efficiency form the basis for a sustainable energy policy and open up opportunities to realize the energy turnaround in the long term within the framework of international cooperation, also in Europe and especially in Germany. This cooperation usually takes place within the framework of projects between Arab and German partners. For the projects, experts are needed who, in addition to technical and economic knowledge, have above all linguistic, social and political knowledge of both the Arab and German cultural spheres. A great potential for cooperation is currently contrasted by a shortage of experts for the realization of corresponding projects.

The Master of Science in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the MENA Region (REMENA) aims to train German and international students with a first academic degree and relevant professional experience in the field of sustainable measures in the energy sector. The first professional degree, usually a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), should have been completed in a legal, economic, social, engineering or natural science field in Germany or abroad. While the content of the program focuses on cooperation between countries in the MENA region and Germany, students can be admitted to the program regardless of their country of origin.

Studying renewable energy - this means an intensive study of different theoretical and practical aspects of technology, economics, law and intercultural issues. The aim of the training is to produce excellent specialists for future projects in the energy sector with a focus on cooperation with countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Students of the REMENA program are trained at different locations. Courses in the form of lectures, seminars, internships and excursions take place in the winter semester at Cairo University in Egypt (6 months) or Université de Monastir in Tunisia (6 months) and in the summer semester at the University of Kassel in Germany (6 months). In addition, an exchange semester (summer semester) can be completed at the Université de Sfax in Tunisia. The preparation of the Master's thesis (6 months) can take place in Germany, the MENA region, etc., if possible in companies  or relevant institutions dealing, for example, with wind farms or photovoltaics for energy production, with thermal insulation in buildings or with energy economics studies. The total duration of the study program is 24 months. The study program can be started in March for the summer semester in Kassel or in September for the winter semester in Cairo or in Monastir . At the end of a successfully completed REMENA program, graduates receive a Master of Science (M.Sc.) double degree from the University of Kassel and Cairo University or Université de Monastir.
