Analysing policies on production and use of non-conventional water resources in Southern Europe/the MENA region
Background: Non-conventional water resources for irrigation, such as wastewater or desalinated water, are becoming increasingly important in regions affected by water scarcity. There is nonetheless also reluctance of farmers to use these resources, inter alia because of higher prices than conventional resources, or lack of trust.
Aim: The aim of this thesis is to analyse in selected Southern European or MENA countries whether and how national (and EU) policies aim to promote the production and use of non-conventional water resources for irrigation. Furthermore, the thesis can also address what are barriers and critiques on the use of these resources.
