PhD Project Title

Development of Solar Assisted Milk Pasteurizer and Mobile Chiller Unit for Income Generation of Rural Communities

Abstract of PhD Thesis

Pakistan is the six most milk producing country in the world but due to lack of awareness and technology in rural areas is leading tonnes of fresh produce going to waste every year. Yet a significant proportion of this is lost due to non-existent cooling systems in small villages and farms. Lack of a reliable electricity supply is one of the biggest challenges in Pakistan. There are about 72 Millions animals in the form of cows and buffaloes in Pakistan. On the other hand due to lack of processing facilities, the farmers have to sell their products at very low prices and significant amount of these products are spoiled due to lack of farm gate processing facilities. The large amount of milk spoiled every year due to non-availability of mobile chillers especially in summer season when environment temperature exceeds 50°Celsius. The promotion of small-scale agro-based industries for value addition using innovative solar technologies can become a multiplier in rural development. Milk can be preserved for a longer period of time and will be able to produce marketable surplus to increase their income. Pasteurization is a heat treatment or thermal process that kills some microorganism but not all the vegetative microorganisms in the food, which are then processed or stored under conditions, which minimize growth. In the case of milk, pasteurization is used to kill pathogenic microorganisms. Around 90% deactivation is achieved some spoilage organisms and spores may survive this heat treatment, it is compulsory to keep pasteurized milk refrigerated to obtain the desired shelf life. The major problem is the mobility of Fresh produce in fresh form to carry from remote rural areas to the urban stations. Hence the economical and solar assisted mobile chiller is the need of time. So therefore an economical and affordable Mobile chiller unit will be designed which will help common farming community to transport milk in hygienic form which will result in income generation. This will also help to minimize the monopoly of big entrepreneurs hence farmers will be the beneficial of this technology.Area of Interest Renewable Energy, Value addition using Solar Energy in Agriculture value chains
