In our teaching of Bachelor and Masters Courses at Göttingen and Kassel-Witzenhausen, especially in the two universities’ joint M.Sc. program “Sustainable International Agriculture”, we focus on the multiple roles of livestock within the still prevailing extensive and semi-intensive livestock systems of tropical and subtropical countries of which most are integrated with cropping systems at various spatial and temporal scales. In order for students to understand the multiple uni- and multilateral interactions between animals and their abiotic and biotic environment, the behavior and physiology of the main domestic species are focal points of teaching. Equally important is the analysis and evaluation of regionally specific agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions in order to understand the characteristics, intensity and efficiency of livestock and crop-livestock systems in the Tropics and Subtropics.

In our lectures we combine classical classroom teaching with student group work and seminars, laboratory exercises and practical application of research tools in the field.
