Between March and May 2017, our doctoral candidate Andreas Jahn completed a research stay at Sunway University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During this time, he was able to strengthen his collaboration with ComTec alumnus Assoc. Prof. Sian Lun Lau and get to know the country and its people.

On the academic front, they discussed topics such as IoT, context recognition, and smart cities, and developed ideas for joint papers. The collaboration will continue and deepen in the future. Assoc. Prof. Lau has already signed up for a return visit to Kassel.

Malaysia was unexpectedly “un-Asian.” Multicultural coexistence there is distinctly Western in character. Society is open and effortlessly integrates multiple faiths and cultures. University life, therefore, followed familiar patterns. Open discussions without hierarchical constraints were easily possible. Student life was also comparable.
