Mentoring

Mentoring refers to the personal support and advice students receive from a professor during the first semesters of their studies. As part of the mentoring program, students are given the opportunity to talk to their mentor outside of everyday seminars and lectures. Fundamental questions about their studies can be discussed, plans for a well-structured course of study can be worked out, but motivation problems, obstacles to learning or academic frustrations can also be addressed. If necessary, the mentor will also work with you to develop specific and individual steps to solve problems.
Organizational notes and information on mentoring at the IfG:
A total of three mentoring appointments are offered in the first four semesters of your studies:
- The first mentoring meeting takes place as a group event with all professors at the IfG for all students in their first semester. This has the advantage that you can get to know all professors once. At the end of this event, you will have one opportunity to change your mentor if you wish. To do so, please write an email to the IfG secretary, Ms. Reichenbach(nina.reichenbach[at]uni-kassel[dot]de), after the end of the event. Students who do not attend the first mentoring meeting will keep the mentor assigned to them.
- The second mentoring meeting takes place at the beginning of the summer semester. This meeting is organized by the respective mentor and takes place either as a group event for the respective group or as a consultation hour. All German Studies students in the second semester will be contacted by the mentor in charge regarding the date and form of the event.
- The third mentoring appointment takes place in the following summer semester (your fourth semester of study) and is organized in the same way as the second appointment.
BA internship report:
As far as the responsibility for the internship and the internship report is concerned, the original assignment is normally binding, i.e. concrete:
- For all students who, following the first mentoring appointment, do not exercise their right to change their assigned professor of confidence, the original assignment remains binding.
- For all students who change their mentor following their participation in the first mentoring appointment, the responsibility for the internship is transferred to the new mentor.
Mentoring Day:
At the first mentoring meeting, you will have the opportunity to get to know the mentor assigned to you in advance:
The first mentoring meeting for all students of German Studies in the first semester will take place on 27.01.2021 from 2 - 4 p.m. as a Zoom conference.
Due to the current COVID 19 situation, the meeting will take place in the form of a virtual Zoom meeting. The corresponding Zoom link will be sent to you by e-mail one week before the planned mentoring meeting. Please check the e-mail account assigned to you by the university regularly so that you do not miss the relevant information.
Please make active use of the mentoring offers at the IfG. Mentoring serves to support you personally during your studies.
We look forward to your participation!
