Information about ISW - Languages

Workshops and workshop seminars are offered on the following main topics:

• Open forms of literature teaching in all types of schools from elementary school, secondary school and grammar school to vocational school
• Local, national and international literary media networks for children and young people
• Promoting spelling and literacy in the classroom
• Developing text skills under the conditions of multilingualism and multiculturalism
• Web blogs as an opportunity to develop writing skills
• Advice on setting up learning workshops and writing workshops
• Bilingual and multilingual educational programs
• Deepening the suggestions, ideas and topics from the regular KEC(Kassel English Colloquia)
• Information on CALL(Computer Assisted Language Learning) and TELL(Technology Enhanced Language Learning)
• Setting up target group-specific learning environments (e.g. specialist rooms, foreign language workshops as well as print, computer and self-study niches at schools)
• Media skills training with interactive whiteboards and iPads
• Romance language task and study database

Until the summer semester of 2009, there were four independent learning workshops at the former Faculty 02 "Language and Literature Studies": the "German Primary Level Learning Workshop" and the "German as a Foreign and Second Language Learning Workshop" at the Institute of German Studies, the "English Learning Workshop" at the Institute of English/American Studies and the "Romance Studies/Foreign Language Teaching and Learning Research Learning Workshop" at the Institute of Romance Studies. These learning workshops had different histories, pursued different concepts and were only externally linked to each other via the study workshop network of the Kassel Center for Teacher Training (ZLB). In the meantime, these four language and culture-related learning workshops and their inventory form the Integrated Study Workshop (ISW) of the new Faculty 02 "Humanities and Cultural Studies".

The Integrated Study Workshop - Languages (ISW - Sprachen) sees itself as a center for independent and research-based study at FB 02. Students can develop individual approaches to subjects of humanities and cultural studies teaching and research. The following work opportunities are available for guided independent study:

• Use of all media for the preparation of presentations, term papers and exams as well as for lesson preparation as part of the practical school studies (SPS) or teaching internships
• Familiarization with didactic applications of technical media and teaching-relevant software
• Work on (empirical) projects, for example as part of subject-specific didactic practical school studies, study-related teaching and research projects and in the field of language teaching and learning media

The ISW also serves to transfer knowledge via school internships and further training events in subject-specific didactic teacher training.

It is connected to the other study workshops of the teacher training departments of the University of Kassel via the Center for Teacher Training (ZLB) and the primary school workshop of FB 01.

All workshops combine subject-didactic concept development, practice-oriented teaching and research-based learning.
