Borders and Freedom of Movement. A critical introduction.

by Fabian Georgi

Europe has been sealing itself off for around four decades. Only the “summer of migration” marked a break. Parties of the “center” support a migration policy that is far beyond basic and human rights standards. Border fences and rejections, camps and mass deportations are an expression of an increasingly clear dystopian fortress capitalism.

In his new book, Fabian Georgi discusses the idea of “global freedom of movement” as an emancipatory project and a core component of socio-ecological transformation. Based on the role of borders in capitalism and a materialist ethics of migration, he examines the problems and challenges of the concrete utopia of open borders: What are the conditions and consequences of a policy of freedom of movement? What would be the starting points for practical action?
