Dr. Tolga Tören schloss sein Masterstudium an der Marmara-Universität (Istanbul), Institut für Sozialwissenschaften, Fachbereich Entwicklungsökonomie und Wirtschaftswachstum (2006), und – im Rahmen der Global Labour University (GLU) – an der University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg), Fakultät für Geisteswissenschaften, Fachbereich Labour Policies and Globalisation  (LPG) (2010) ab.

Von September bis Oktober 2010 war er im Rahmen seines Doktoratsstudiums Gastwissenschaftler am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Witwatersrand.

Im Jahr 2012 schloss er seine Doktorarbeit mit dem Titel „Südafrika: Von der Apartheid zur wirtschaftlichen Emanzipation der Schwarzen: Neuformulierung von race und Klasse auf der Grundlage der Historizität der Kapitalakkumulation” an der Marmara-Universität, Institut für Sozialwissenschaften, Abteilung für Entwicklungsökonomie und Wirtschaftswachstum, ab.

Als Mitglied der Global Labour University (GLU) und des Global Partnership Network (GPN) lehrt und forscht Dr. Tören seit 2017 an den Fachbereichen Labour Policies and Globalisation (LPG) sowie Globale Politische Ökonomie und Entwicklung (GPED) der Universität Kassel zu den Themen Arbeitspolitik und Globalisierung, Entwicklung und Unterentwicklung sowie Forschungsmethoden.

Von März bis Mai 2018 war er außerdem Gastprofessor am Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Fakultät für Sozialwissenschaften der Universität Wien.

Dr. Törens Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf Arbeitspolitik und Globalisierung, mit besonderem Fokus auf prekäre Arbeitsbedingungen, sowie auf der globalen politischen Ökonomie und Entwicklung – insbesondere der politischen Ökonomie der Entwicklung, Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, und der Dynamik von Entwicklung und Unterentwicklung.
