URRM - Urban Resilience and Risk Management: Understanding Egypt’s Delta Region

Within the framework of the German-Egyptian Progress Partnership Program Line 1: University Partnerships 2021-2022, the Department of Urban Renewal and Planning Theory of the University of Kassel in cooperation with the Department of Engineering - Architecture - ESU Lab- Urban City Unit of Mansoura University in Egypt has initiated the project Delta-Kassel - URRM - Urban Resilience and Risk Management: Understanding Egypt's Delta Region. The project runs from January 2021 to the end of 2022 and is concerned with deepening cooperation with Mansoura and Kafrelshiekh Universities in Egypt through the organization and implementation of various forms of scientific and student exchange.

Thematically, the project deals with the issue of Urban Resilience in the Nile Delta, especially in the city of Burg Al-Burullus and its surroundings as one of the Egyptian metropolitan areas facing several challenges regarding the development of its socio-urban and ecological environment. Therefore, the objectives of the project are to:

  1. study these challenges in relation to the national as well as international discourses, and
  2. explore the potentials of applying resilience approaches and resilience tools to the study case.
