Formfit | New Market Hall Berlin

winter semester 2021/22
event number | FB06.508

The studio focuses on the design and construction of a market hall in winter semester 2021/22. The project aims to create a long span structure over magdeburgerPlatz in Berlin using a form-fit construction principle which was developed on the context of the previous “Adaptive modular connection” seminar. The construction method takes advantages of interlocking connections to create 3D dimensional joints which can adapt to different boundaries condition in the structure. The digital detailing concept organizes the manufacturing and assembly process by applying and create a fast assembly on sit process without the need of templates, shop drawings or auxiliary constructions.

A short Berlin excursion to visit the site and visiting other steel structures in Berlin will be the first step for the inspiration. The project will be also supplemented by form-finding workshop in the kompakwoche to engage the students with different digital form-finding and analysis tools. Through the studio, students with the research associate’s support will develop a digital design workflow for a steel to integrate the grid-shell with fabrication constrains of the connections as well as assembly process. In the feedback process, results from structural analysis and physical load bearing testing will inform the overall geometry.

The project will provide the students with the opportunity to apply computer-aided design and fabrication methodologies in an integrated manner. The completion of the project including design development, documentation, fabrication and assembly of the connection within the course will require stamina and commitment. The expected outcomes of this work are series of connection and 1:50 scale model of the design building.
