Planning theory

Introduction to planning theories with presentation of selected paradigmatically significant developments. Presentation of basic concepts of social science, process-related theories ('theories of planning') in urban, regional and landscape planning. Critical analysis of important theoretical perspectives of recent decades using planning examples: Rationalist theories, perspectival incrementalism, communicative theories, governance and governmentality, post-structuralist and agonistic theories, post-growth planning and socio-ecological transformations. Planning, politics and ethical dilemmas; planner roles; planning and populism. Possibilities for developing your own theory-led research designs. Theories, methodologies and methods. In addition to lecture parts and seminar blocks, the course will also deal with a reflection and theoretical categorisation of important practical examples. The aim is to gain a better understanding of how the planning system is embedded in society, how planning action is organised in the context of conflicting interests and what structural limits it encounters.

The course is usually held in person.

The first meeting will take place on Thursday, 18 April 2024 at 10:00 a.m.
