VACANT CITY?
In the design studio “LEERE STADT?” we deal with vacancies in Kassel. Using the example of three buildings, the post office at Untere Königstraße 95, the villa at Goethestraße 46 and the Hansa-Haus at Kurt-Schumacher-Straße 31, we are primarily investigating how speculative vacancy affects rent increases on the housing market, how vacancy occurs and what consequences made vacancy has for the population.
What does “made” vacancy mean? In view of the tight housing market and climate change, various concepts are being developed that outline the intransparency of vacancies and offer sustainable solutions for the reactivation and conversion of vacant buildings in Kassel. In cooperation with the vacancy detector whysoempty, the Staatstheater Kassel and the theater collective And Partners in Crime, we have developed methods to make vacancies in Kassel's urban space visible. At the end of the semester, we organize a network meeting with various actors from politics, the building economy, urban and spatial planning, family support and many more.
