Digitale Fabrikationsmethoden - Play with Clay
Wintersemester 2025/2026 - Sommersemester 2026 - Wintersemester 2026/2027
Wiss. Mitarbeitende | Dipl. Des. Lisa Heinze
In this workshop, you will learn how to design a digital model using Grasshopper and transform it into a 3D-printed porcelain object through robotic fabrication. You will work through the full process step by step, from understanding the material and tools, through idea development and digital modeling, to robotic printing and iterative refinement. This course is aimed at students with minor or no Rhino/Grasshopper knowledge.
Learning goals
- Understand the basics of algorithmic thinking in Grasshopper and its role in 3D printing
- Apply Grasshopper knowledge to a robotic 3D-printing workflow
- Gain hands-on experience working with clay as a printing material
- Design and print a small object through a robotic fabrication process
Qualification goal
After successfully completing this workshop, you will understand the overall workflow of robotic 3D printing in architecture and will be able to apply that knowledge to prepare a print path for a small object using basic components in Grasshopper. You will be able to assemble the extruder and feeding system and prepare the material for 3D printing. You will also be able to judge the quality of printed objects and adjust printing parameters accordingly.
Methods
This one-week workshop combines input presentations and tutorials with hands-on, practice-based learning in the Robotic Design Lab. You will move from guided demonstrations — such as machine assembly, material preparation, and robot control — to independently developing and refining your own print path, supported by ongoing feedback and group discussion throughout the week.
