Added value through and from insects
Kassel, November 26, 2025 - Uni:Lokal Kassel hosted an event that brought together scientific and socially relevant perspectives on sustainability. The guests were Maximilian Pommerehne from REPLOID Deutschland GmbH and Prof. Dr. Ralf Wagner from the University of Kassel's Department of Sustainable Marketing.
Maximilian Pommerehne opened the evening with a practical insight into working with black soldier fly (BSF) larvae. He showed the role these larvae play in biological cycles and how they efficiently convert organic waste into valuable biomass. This creates new ecological and economic potential - from the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to innovative approaches for a resource-conserving circular economy. BSF larvae are regarded as natural decomposers and producers that transform waste into nutrient-rich materials and thus provide important impetus for future food systems.
Prof. Dr. Ralf Wagner then shed light on global developments: A BSF farm that was set up in Bacolod (Philippines) as part of a practical project by the Sustainable Marketing department of the University of Kassel in cooperation with La Consolidation College Bacolod and the University of St. La Salle. At this farm, several tons of food waste were processed every day into high-quality proteins for animal fattening in a climate-friendly way. This has saved the emission of many tons of greenhouse gas emissions, especially methane, every day. By linking regional innovations - such as the use of biological cycles - with international climate impacts, Prof. Wagner made it clear how closely local and global sustainability issues are interwoven. He focused on the recent typhoons in the Philippines. In November this year, the BSF farm was completely destroyed by a typhoon. This extreme event highlights the increasing impact of climate change on sustainability innovations and underlines the need for resilient strategies.
The participants took the opportunity to exchange ideas, ask questions and gain new perspectives on sustainability. The University of Kassel would like to thank the speakers for their dedicated contributions and all guests for their interest and looks forward to continuing the dialog at upcoming events.
In addition, the University of Kassel will continue to deepen this exchange and thus provide impetus for innovative, sustainable solutions in the region and beyond.
